St. Stephens Comprehensive secondary school is located in
Manfwe district, Uganda. It is the only secondary school in the area and
services over 30 primary schools. There are a total of 742 students at St. Stephens and they all currently share one latrine, a latrine that is quickly filling.
The amount of human waste in the current latrine will have
it reach its capacity shortly, leaving the students nowhere to go. The only
solution the school currently has is to dig another latrine when it fills. Our goal is to alleviate the need to build latrine after
latrine by constructing a latrine that can be emptied by truck when filled.
This type of latrine allows for increased sanitation. Providing
a sanitary latrine will alleviate sickness in the school and help children
remain in school.Remaining in school allows for a brighter future here in
Uganda.Your support is so appreciated. If you can help with $10,
$20 or $50 – 742 students will be truly grateful!
Please support us in helping these
talented children. It's an honor to live with them and help them. Please help
us provide a more sanitary atmosphere. Your gift is tru ly appreciated.
What We Need
These funds will help build the much needed latrine at St. Stephens Secondary School. The school and local community are contributing labor and expertise in the building of the latrine, as well as additional supplies. Involving the community has produced a sense of ownership and care for the project. However, this poor community has given all they can and are asking for your help!
If we do not reach the full goal we will begin building the latrine but will have to eliminate finishes such as doors and waterproof paint pivotal to privacy and sanitation. Please help us reach our goal!
The Impact
742 students at St. Stephens Comprehensive Secondary School are currently using one latrine. The current latrine is close to filling, which will leave the students and staff no where to go.
This latrine project is specifically designed to be sustainable by allowing for a truck to come in and empty the latrine. Other pit latrines are designed to fill and the seal, this latrine would alleviate the need to pit latrine after latrine and provide a more sanitary solution.
This latrine also allows for further privacy for young girls. In Uganda it is an unfortunate common occurrence that girls will not attend school during their menstrual cycle due to lack of facilities and privacy. These absences often lead to poor testing, and eventually leads to dropping out. This latrine would provide the girls their own space and sanitation and allow for them to continue their education.
Risks & Challenges
If we do not raise the necessary funds we will be unable to complete the latrine project. The reality if this project depends on you!
The community and the school are contributing all they can to the project by providing half the bricks, and all of the river sand, ordinary cement, iron sheets, hoop iron, ventilators, and a discounted price on the doors. The other supplies required will allow for a sanitary and safe latrine.
