What You Can Do!

Your donation will help to prepare the environmental, social and cultural plans for the remediation of the contaminated forest and the  empowerment of the social organization of the affected indigenous and farmer communities. 

This fund serves to:

1.  Ensure the communication by helping the UDAPT (Unión de Afectados/as por las Operaciones de la petrolera Texaco-Chevron),  representing more than 30 000 affected people to develop efficient communication and information campaigns about the case and the effective progress of the legal actions in order to obtain Chevron’s payment for the remediation of  the Amazon.

2.  Help the affected indigenous and farmers to get prepared by developing the capacity of the UDAPT in order to organize and control the remediation of the Amazon by themselves as well as to give them the opportunity to take actively part in the remediation of their environment.

¿Cómo puedes ayudar?

Con el dinero donado usted está ayudando a preparar los planes de reparación ambiental, social  cultural de la Amazonía ecuatoriana contaminada por Chevron y a fortalecer la organizacion social de los indígenas y campesinos afectados. 

Estos fondos sirven para:

1. Asegurar la comunicación ayudando a la UDAPT (Unión de Afectados/as por las Operaciones de la petrolera Texaco-Chevron),  quienes representan a más de 30 mil afectados para que puedan realizar  campañas efectivas de comunicación e información  sobre el caso y el seguimiento efectivo de las acciones de cobro a Chevron, para la reparación de la Amazonía.

2. Ayuda a los indígenas y campesinos afectados a prepararse, incrementando la capacidad de la Unión de Afectados por las operaciones de Texaco – Chevron (UDAPT) para establecer planes para organizar y controlar por sí mismos la reparación de la Amazonía y posibilitar a las comunidades afectadas que sean parte activa en la remediación de su ambiente.

Our Story

During the last 21 years, indigenous and colon communities (30.000 victims) from Northern Amazonia in Ecuador united to fight for their rights, in an unequal legal battle against one of the biggest petroleum companies in the world. This company, Texaco, now Chevron, operated for 26 years in the region and left extensive contamination causing the destruction of these people’s habitat, inhibiting their ability to develop and increasing the levels of mortality and disease, all directly related to the chemicals used during their extractions. The Union for Those Affected by Texaco Operations (UDAPT), the association representing the victims of Texaco (now Chevron), needs urgent help in order to finally win the battle and to make the remediation of  the Amazon become reality.

The affected communities won the trial in Ecuador where Chevron decided to litigate. Nevertheless, the company refuses to comply with the court order and pay 9.5 billions dollars for the remediation of 450‘000 hectars of rainforest and the establishment of health plans for 30 000 men and women suffering from a high level of cancer, leucemia and other diseases due to the contamination. Since several years Chevron launched systematic attacks against the victims to avoid the payment. The company removed its assets out of Ecuador. Therefore the affected communities have to litigate in different courts in the countries where Chevron owns assets in order to recover the payment of the damages according to the judgment.

To this end, as it was done during the 21 last years, it is important to go on with the social mobilisation, the actions to visibilise the case, to inform the world about the facts and to strengthen the resistance. If the UDAPT should give up the trials, the victims of the Amazon will be flouted by the company which has mobilised all its efforts on the global level to remain unpunished.

Nuestra Historia

Hace más de 21 años, comunidades indígenas y de colonos (30 000 víctimas) de la Amazonía Norte de Ecuador, se reunieron para luchar  por sus derechos, en una batalla desigual contra una de las mayores petroleras del mundo, la multinacional Chevron, que durante 26 años de operación en la región, dejó una extensa contaminación que causó la destrucción de su hábitat, mermó sus posibilidades de desarrollo, incrementó los niveles de mortalidad y elevó los casos de enfermedades directamente relacionadas con los químicos utilizados para las actividades en la industria hidrocarburíferas. La Unión de Afectados y Afectadas por las Operaciones Petroleras de Texaco (UDAPT), asociación representante de las víctimas de Texaco (ahora Chevron), necesita ayuda urgente para concluir la batalla y luego lograr que la reparación de la Amazonía se vuelva realidad.

Las/os afectados/as ganaron el juicio en Ecuador, sitio donde Chevron decidió litigar;  sin embargo, la petrolera se niega a cumplir con la orden judicial de pagar 9.500 millones de dólares para la reparación de 450 000 hectáreas de selva amazónica y el establecemiento de planes de salud para los 30.000 hombres y mujeres que sufren ahora de un alto nivelde cáncer, leucemia y otras enfermedades causados por la contaminación.  Chevron desde hace varios años, viene ejecutando un ataque sistemático en contra de las víctimas  para evitar pagar. La compañía retiró sus activos en Ecuador, por lo que los afectados deben litigar en distintas cortes donde posee bienes para lograr el cobro de la sentencia.

 Para el efecto, al igual que en los 21 años precedentes, es importante continuar con  la movilización social, las acciones por visibilizar el caso, informar al mundo de los hechos y fortalecer la resistencia de las comunidades.  De no continuar con los procesos, la UDAPT, los afectados y la Amazonía serán burlados por la petrolera que ha movilizado todos sus esfuerzos a nivel global para quedar impune.

Chevron has put into play a whole global structure of impunity and used all its economical and political power. This forced  the UDAPT  to initiate legal actions in different countries some of which have set important legal precedents that are being analysed andimproving the protection of all the populations in the world, whose rights are violated by corporate power. Meanwhile the Amazon population still continues suffering from the consequences of contamination causing every day more victims.

The social organisation which promoted the legal actions and won the legal battle in Ecuador and brought it now on the global level, has demonstrated  that its organisational strength remains its main capital to achieve justice. Today the  new challenge is to overcome the economic siege imposed by Chevron which inhibits the capacity of organisation to continue its internal processes in order to counteract the Chevron’s economical and political pressures as well as  to develop competences to manage the reparation of thousands of hectars of rainforest which is a highly specialised task. Therefore the empowerment of  the UDAPT is essential, but the funds are lacking. The Union cannot lose because the  Ecuadorian Amazon  deserves to live!

Ayuda a la población de la selva tropical para  la remediación de la Amazonía

La organización social que ha promovido la demanda judicial y ha ganado la batalla legal en el Ecuador y ahora la enfrenta a nivel global, ha demostrado que la fortaleza organizativa para la búsqueda de justicia es su mayor capital. Ahora el nuevo reto es superar el cerco económico impuesto por la compañía, que imposibilita a los afectados la capacidad para continuar con sus procesos internos necesarios para contrarrestar las presiones económicas y políticas de Chevron; y capacitarse para enfrentar la reparación de mil hectáreas de selva amazónica, que es una actividad que demanda alta especialización.  Por ello el fortalecimiento de la UDAPT es imprescindible, pero no cuenta con los fondos necesarios. Han ganado la demanda en Ecuador y ahora no pueden perder porque la Amazonía ecuatoriana merece volver a vivir.
