My name is Thomas Fallon Mackey, and I'm an artist and photographer living and working in Santa Cruz, CA. I'm raising funds so that I may continue to focus on creating and exhibiting my art and photography in the coming year.
Reflecting our environment, surfaces has been one theme that has emerged from my work.
In 1999 I started a series of photographs of sea foam floating on the surface of water. These were made transparent and mounted on canvas to make the images more vivid than a traditional photographic print. This series presently numbers 43 small works.
I've also made short videos of sea foam, which convey the constantly changing shapes of foam on the move. I'd like to do more and higher quality videos related to this series. Check out my short videos on youtube.
The Surface series, started in 2007, are acrylic on canvas, taking off on the theme of the surface of water. Decidedly abstract and evocative, they are expressions of emotion.
Since 2002 I've journeyed to Death Valley every March and October for photographic inspiration, also focusing on the theme of surfaces and abstraction in nature. I've self-published 4 photo books on the themes of Surfaces, Canyon Walls, Dried Mud, and the range of environments in the largest park in the continental U.S.
My latest work re-creates the dried cracked surfaces of the desert playa, in relief on canvas. I'm excited to be merging watery and dry surfaces, representing natural events occurring at different times in nature, simultaneously.
I'm looking forward to showing my latest work, and reaching a larger audience.
