Taiwan will be the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage and implement equal rights for same-sex couples into it's civil code. Just 30 years ago it was ruled under martial law and is now on the verge of setting an historic example for other Asian countries.
The documentary taipeilove* follows three protagonists who talk about their struggles, their experiences and hope regarding the recent developments in Taiwan. Further context is given by activists, politicians, representatives from educational NGOs.
The protagonists Sarah, Kevin and David share their hopes and experiences struggling with cultural, traditional, religious and deep-rooted homophobic beliefs of society while waiting for Taiwan to become the first-Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage. Homosexuality and the society's way of treating it is an especially complex topic in an Asian country like Taiwan. The protagonists share their heart-warming stories and speak about gay and lesbian life with an authentic and honest voice.
This documentary is a testimony that shows how history is currently being written in Taiwanese society and Lucie Liu is the first European filmmaker to be tackling that topic.

My name is Lucie Liu and I’m a Berlin-based filmmaker. The activists, demonstrators and ordinary people from all over Asia, whom I met at the Gay Pride Taipei in October 2016, inspired me to write the concept for taipeilove*. The openness and tolerance in Taiwan is unique in Asia and continues to exert a strong fascination on me. Taipeilove* gives me the opportunity to portray the progressive society and at the same time show the problems which gays and lesbians still endure. My own bicultural background has a strong impact on taipeilove*. When juxtaposing my European (German) and Asian (China) roots, I had always contended that the former enhanced my progressiveness and openness, while associating the latter with cultural pressure and inability to openly discuss pressing issues.
It is pleasantly surprising for me that the Asian counterpart is now taking a major step towards expanding human rights. With Germany legalizing same-sex marriage in 2017, these parallel and similar changes in the German and Taiwanese society make taipeilove* an important real time testimony of what progressive and open societies can achieve.
This documentary is being made for an audience of interested people from countries in the west, an Asian audience that wants to learn more about on-going struggles in Taiwan as well as anybody who has ever experienced repression due to their homosexuality to show them that change is possible.

The filmmaker is based in Berlin. Camera, sound and translation are provided by partners from the Taiwanese side. This intercultural and cross-border approach in the production process is aiming to create a differentiated and honest image of the current situation in Taiwan. I want to collaborate with creatives in Taiwan that are interested and passionate about this topic. taipeilove* is an international coproduction of young (political) creatives from Germany, France and Taiwan.

Everyone who is involved in this project is passionate about creating a documentary that tackles the topic of equality in an Asian country and its impact on the rest of Asia and hopefully the world.

Creating an independent documentary is difficult, and making one in Taiwan provides even more challenges. The makers of taipeilove* believe that this topic deserves exposure and that this documentary is the best way to capture this milestone.
We believe the only way for a unique film like this to get out into the world is with a strong community. This is why we have chosen to launch an Indiegogo campaign. The money that we raise will supplement our post-production costs and get us to international film festivals next year. The film is currently in Mandarin and Taiwanese with English and Chinese subtitles. The more we raise the more subtitles we can add in other languages!
We will be posting regular updates about taipeilove*, milestones in our campaign and highlights of our postproduction here. For more information and a mini video series regarding the movie, take a look on our Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or Twitter page.
