Missing people, a strange new drug, gateways to another world, and a terrifying monster that lurks in the shadows.
After her lover goes missing, a mysterious Hippie named Moonflower travels to the small, whimsical town of Roam to uncover what happened to him. As Moonflower meets the town's strangely macabre inhabitants and begins to slowly unravel its mysteries, she soon discovers that her lover is far from the only one to have gone missing, but is rather just a small piece in a long history of missing children. Starting her investigation at the town's school, a black spot of missing person cases, Moonflower tracks down a devilish man known only as The Dealer, who has played a large role in trapping her sweetheart in another realm, where he is being hunted by a horrific beast of folklore. Meeting up with a soap-selling sailor and an otherworldly ringleader, they uncover the secret door to the monster’s realm and delve into the belly of the beast to save her man and put a stop to this beast's reign. After nearly facing death within the monster's realm, Moonflower rescues her lover and returns once more to the small town, confronting the Dealer and finally bringing an end to the tyranny that has plagued the town for many years.

We already have the ideas and the wonderful crew to make this film a reality, but we need your help to bring the rest of Moonflower's story to life. Your funding will go mostly towards production design and costumes to create our fantastical worlds and our terrifying monster.

Your donations will also go towards securing locations, equipment rentals, proper insurance, feeding our cast and crew, as well as PPE and other materials to ensure that our production is Covid-19 safe.
Risks and Challenges
Covid-19 has brought new risks and challenges to filmmaking, and new expenses. In addition to securing the necessary funding for all of the production expenses, we will be bringing on a Covid compliance officer to our crew to ensure that we are adhering to all of the necessary guidelines and restrictions in place in British Columbia at the time of filming. This also includes acquiring PPE and thermometers to secure and monitor the health of our cast and crew, as well as individually packaged food to mitigate any further spread of Covid-19 on set.

Film is a powerful medium. It always has been, and because of that, we have all put a lot of stock in what we watch. Film can be so powerful in fact, that the things portrayed through its lens have shaped the thoughts and opinions of the world at large. What we watch and listen to, be it through movies, the news, or simply social media, has the power to subconsciously teach us wondrous things and help push us towards a better tomorrow, but film is just as capable of dragging us backward as it is at pushing us forwards, and this is something that has been seen since the media itself was first created.
The Hippie Who Came to Roam explores the themes of cinema in relation to the cultural ethos and its impact on the subconscious mind. It’s important that filmmakers are careful with what they portray through the medium and that audiences are careful with what they consume. Roam takes the escapist mold of classical Hollywood cinema and flips it on his head in a statement on film as, in many ways, a religious experience, changing one’s mindset of the world around you and expanding your mind in a psychedelic fashion to more than what you had noticed before. In an age where people blindly follow and believe whatever they hear, it is paramount that we do not blindly follow other ideas without thought, but instead, listening to all thoughts and opinions and coming to your own personal conclusions.
Two years ago now, both directors (Taran Sukert and Bowen Munsil) worked on The Ash Under My Nails for a budget of $1200 achieved through Indiegogo as well. The film was completed later that year, winning a JOEY award in the process. Together with a similar crew, they hope to expand the budget and build on everything they’ve learned to create this feature.

Feeling like an old Hollywood fairytale, the film's visuals and aesthetics draw inspiration from a wide variety of films across the ages to compliment and explore the theme of cinema’s impact on the subconscious mind. From the saturated horror of Giallo, the magic of Georges Melies, the mystery of David Lynch, the monsters of Del Toro, the mysticism of Jodorowsky, and touches and homages to the history of film as a whole, this is sure to be a visual feast, a psychological exploration, and a metaphysical experience.
