The Honeycomb Table
A design forward, high-end side table made out of sustainably grown plywood and beautiful veneers. Use it as a bedside table or the centerpiece of a living room; in any room it will demand a presence.
THE DESIGN - The Honeycomb Table was created during a design studio at Rhode Island School of Design. The project began with drawings and paintings from natural objects under magnification, which formed an understanding of the geometric form of honeycombs. Inspired by Middle Eastern patterns and the materiality of the Arts and Crafts movement, I adapted this geometric form into a nine-layered side table. It was designed to be cut out of veneered sheets of high quality, furniture grade Baltic Birch plywood, accentuating the layered design concept, adding to the sustainability of the otherwise slow growing hardwood veneers and providing a surprising amount of strength to a seemingly delicate structure. Assembled the table stands 20” H 16” W 14” D.
THE PRODUCTION - The tables start as ten separate pieces of hardwood plywood and are vacuum veneered on the top surface with your choice of Red Oak, Curly Maple, Cherry or Black Walnut. The intricate, interlocking layers are cut using a computer controlled routing/milling table to provide the high level of precision demanded by the design. Once cut, each piece is hand finished before being assembled. The natural finishes selected seal the wood from water and draws out the layered and figured beauty and shine.
THE FUNDING - Your funding will allow me to put this finely produced table into production. It will supply the funding to purchase the precision tools and materials and includes packaging and shipping of the finished tables you, the donors. Once the production shop is establish, I will first produce these signature tables ordered by you, the first funders, and then continue production with distribution both online and in stores.
THE REWARDS - Some great rewards are being offered with this project. Starting at $150, Honeycomb Tabletop inspired trays are available in your choice of two veneers. These beautiful items are great for dinner parties or a night in and are made of the same fine materials and precision as the full tables. They are the perfect donation level for a donor who wants to support the project, but cannot afford a table or for a donor who loves the table so much they want more. At the upper levels the table is being offered in a great line of veneers. Each piece is given great attention and is complete with a its own Indie Gogo serial number to differentiate them as original run designs separate from the upcoming production run pieces.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER - My name is Colin Wiencek, a Furniture Design student at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). My work often references architecture and traditional designs from around the world. My design concepts utilize the precise capabilities of modern production methods to produce crisp, fine line design without minimizing quality. My production techniques provide the craftsmanship typical of expensive, individually crafted, fine furniture pieces to be bought to the consumer at reasonable costs accessible by all.

The images on this page picture the prototype table, the production pieces will vary slightly due to new production methods. The cut sides will not be black as in the prototype, but rather the fine horizontal planes and varied tones of the furniture grade ply, played against the interlocking veneered planes of the Honeycomb design.
Parcel Post Shipping is included in all levels of rewards. International donors: please contact me before pledging for additional shipping prices.
