Erwin is an artist and educator from Singapore. He travels extensively with his sketchbooks; recording visages of people he meets, places and cultures he has personally experienced. In August 2014, with the support of 881 backers, he successfully funded The Perfect Sketchbook - a pocket sized sketchbook filled with the finest watercolor paper - through Kickstarter.

Bynd Artisan (Collaborator & Manufacturer)
The heritage of Bynd Artisan dates back to 1945 when a book making company was set up along Mohamed Sultan Road. It was a family-run business that served a genuine need and it gradually grew beyond the boundaries of Singapore and Malaysia. Through the intervening years, the business of book-binding has changed as technology progressed. Yet at its heart, each and every book has its beginning much like in the days of old - hand-designed and prototyped by a small band of craftsmen who grew up in the trade.

Risks and challenges

1) Since The Perfect Sketchbook B5 is created using quality materials from all around the world, shipment of the various materials may potentially run into delays. Prices and availability of raw materials may also fluctuate. We have cushioned our budget with a modest amount to account for such events. In the event that raw materials have to be replaced (very unlikely), supporters will be updated at the soonest possible.

2) Cases of top quality paper manufacturers producing badly “sized” paper are common. While we will do our very best to ensure that all the paper we use are properly sized, there may still be situations where paper supplied to us for production is not appropriately sized and result in less than ideal outcomes when used.

3) Bynd Artisan has more than 70 years of experience in book-making. There will be regular visits paid to the manufacturing facility so that backers can be updated on the manufacturing progress accordingly.

4) While the team puts in its utmost effort in ensuring that the books are shipped on time, the shipping efficiency of local postal services at various countries are largely out of our control.

FAQs:

1. Will The Perfect Sketchbook B5 be in stores after this campaign?
This is very unlikely. Unless the demand far exceeds expectations in this campaign, producing more of The Perfect Sketchbook B5 is not yet sustainable. That’s why it’s important that you share our campaign on social media. Each of us is connected by six degrees of separation, and your ability to reach other deserving artists can help us reach retail.

2.The project has hit the target fund. Can I still back this project?
Absolutely! Hitting the target fund merely confirms production. The more funds we raise, the more books we can make and the more likely it is that we can move this towards retail. Personally, I am more interested in endorsing talented artists with the extra funds. For example, funds could be used to curate an art show with our sketchbooks. Imagine an exhibition in which the top talents can showcase their work in The Perfect Sketchbook B5.  Such an event would be spectacular.

3. Why is there different pricing for the single books? Why are some single books cheaper than the bundles?
Last year, thanks to contributions from 881 backers, The Perfect Sketchbook Pocket was funded on kickstarter.com. In recognition of our backers’ contributions, we set aside 900 books at special rates of $40 (without personalization) and $45 (with personalization). Multiple check-outs of these single book perks are possible on indiegogo.com. Earlier, a few backers wrongly informed me that multiple check-outs were impossible unless you used multiple emails. That is incorrect; I have successfully executed multiple check-outs on each perk using the same account.

4. I pledged funds and requested a personalized copy of the book. Where can I submit my personalization information?
Thank you for your pledge.  We will send out a form for you to submit your personalization information when we start making The Perfect Sketchbook B5.  Manufacturing is scheduled to occur in March 2016.

5. I donated and requested 10 books with personalization. Can I request different names/phrases/initials for those books?
Absolutely! You can personalize each book with a different name/phrase/initials. Personalization text is limited to 15 characters (including spaces).

6. Are the sketchbooks going to be all handmade?
No. Mr Chong merely demonstrated how we crafted the prototypes. Machines will be involved in the actual making of The Perfect sketchbook B5. However, page will still be hand-torn. As with our first campaign, we will document the processes involved and we will take you on a journey of bookmaking with Bynd Artisan.
