Synopsis

The Year of Lexi and Dawn tells the story of two girls who become stepsisters (and best friends) the summer before eighth grade. Told over the course of a year, we see their parents' new relationship through their eyes as they move through four key phases: the honeymoon, growing pains, the fight, and the end.

How it started

Genevieve, Tiajha and I all bonded over the fact that our first true “heartbreaks” were actually with our middle school best friends. While romantic breakups get a lot of attention in TV & film, we wanted to shed some much-deserved light on the heartbreak that occurs when you drift apart from a good friend.

This led us to The Year of Lexi and Dawn.

Our Plan: Schedule & Budget

Here’s a high-level overview of our schedule:

SHOOT DATES: 9/21, 9/22, 9/28 & 9/29

So far, we have:

  • Cast Leads - Excited to work w. Candace & Sophie as our Lexi & Dawn!
  • Location - Thanks to a GREAT friend, we locked location for free
  • GFX - Tiajha's talented sister designed our title (above) for the film
  • Teaser - Making this teaser helped us solidify a visual language for the short, giving you a sneak peak into the beautiful work our cast & crew can do!

So what else do we need to bring this home?

We’re in the “technical” stage of pre-production and are figuring out how to design, light, and shoot the film. As we prepare for the shoot, our major costs will be:

  1. Equipment - To rent cameras & lighting/sound equip. for 4 shoot days
  2. Production Design - To clean the house, costume & set dressings
  3. Shoot Logistics - Travel for crew, lodging, insurance, etc.
  4. Food - With most of our crew donating their time, we want to make sure they're well-fed!

Full budget breakdown below (post-production not included):

**With a minimum of $12,000, we are confident we can complete the film. Additional funds will help us pay more crew members, get dream equipment, and cover post-production costs.

We have a generous donor willing to match the first $5000 we raise!

How can you help?

We are so close to the finish line! Our next hurdle is to cover the costs laid out above. Our goal is to raise $15,000 by our shoot (scheduled for end of September). Any donation helps!

Other ways you can help...

We could also use your help in spreading the word.

THE TEAM

Crew

DIRECTOR: Genevieve Diaz was born and raised in Southern California. She is a multi-disciplinary artist who has worked with many local artists on various projects. While working in Post Production at MasterClass, she is also constantly hustling on her side projects - her most recent work being featured on Vogue Italia.  She is a constant ball of positive energy & a source of inspiration to everyone that has had a chance to work with her. If you need a little pick-me-up, talk to Genevieve.

PRODUCER: Tiajha Nakahara was born and raised in Okinawa, Japan, and studied Design Media Arts and Film at UCLA.  She worked on the Creative Content/Pixar University team at Pixar Animation Studios and now proudly works in Post Production at MasterClass.  She most recently produced a film called GAMERS, which screened at Frameline Film Festival, CAAM Fest, and Phoenix Film Festival to name a few.  Tiajha carries her producing talents over to her social life, whether it be planning a night of karaoke or a trip to Korea - she’ll make it happen.

WRITER: Carolyn Mazanec was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. Before joining the Post Production team at MasterClass, she worked for Adobe on the Marketing Cloud side. In addition to her passion for Lebron James, Carolyn has also always loved to write. She knew she wanted to pursue writing as a career after publishing her first novel, A Pink House.  Other hobbies include laughing (mostly at her own jokes) and making mini cootie catchers out of post-it notes.

EDITOR: Annie Erickson was born and raised in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She was an IT wizard working at University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining the Post Production team at MasterClass.  She still troubleshoots our computers with a positive attitude even though that's no longer her job. You can ask Annie anything and she will always be there for support. Annie is also known for her "Annie-facts" where she drops random trivia at random times of the day.

Cast

LEXI: Candace Tsay (13) is an incoming freshman at the King’s Academy and studies acting at Bay Area Acting Studio. She enjoys behind the scenes work and editing with Final Cut Pro. She has been acting in film for two years and has two other short films under her belt. As an actress, she strongly believes in working on films with stories that are very human and relatable to a wide audience. It’s not the size of the production that matters, but the script, the cast, and the crew.

DAWN: Sophia Hughes (15) has been acting for 7 years in a variety of different roles in theatre, film and commercials. She has also been dancing for five years on a competitive team in Sacramento, where she currently lives with her family.
