The Art of Protest
This December, The Next Four Years- Milwaukee shared a call for protest poster designs via Facebook, Twitter and email. Ten days later, a jury of art professionals and activists from diverse backgrounds reviewed the submissions, and selected “We Rise” as the first of image to go to print.
Protest posters have given voice to individuals with views that have been silenced by oppression throughout history. Capable of provoking large numbers of people in dialogue, the messages contained within a protest poster influence the place in which it is seen until removed. The thoughts and conversations sparked by the poster create a catalyst to action.
Tear Us Down, We Rise.
The first design selected by N4Y-MKE is emblematic of the power and necessity in protecting women’s rights. Collaboratively designed by artists Niki Johnson & Christian Westphal We Rise is inspired by Johnson’s recent artwork Hills & Valleys, made out of the signage from Planned Parenthood health care centers defunded under Governor Scott Walker’s administration in Wisconsin. Johnson was the recipient of Planned Parenthood Wisconsin’s 2016 Voices Award for the visibility and activism she inspired through the creation of her artwork. Niki Johnson is beginning a national tour with Hills & Valleys in collaboration with national Planned Parenthood affiliates in 2017.
The Next Four Years - Milwaukee is proud to stand with Johnson, Westphal and this design- offering We Rise as a symbol of the power of women in the face of adversity.

Who We Are
The Next Four Years - Milwaukee was founded the day after the 2016 presidential election. Now over 4,400 members strong, N4Y-MKE is taking action to prevent further harm to our rights, our environment and the constitution by the Trump administration, its appointees, and all state parties who flout the rule of law & the will of the people. The next four years are going to demand we join together to coordinate action against legislation and executive actions that come out of Washington DC and our state legislatures. Stand with us and join our community!
By purchasing and carrying one of our posters at the Women's March on Washington (or at the next rally you attend), you join us, standing with our community of activists and artists in resistance against the forces of hate, bigotry, racism, anti-feminism and anti-LGBT that won this election.
Join Us!
The Next Four Years - Milwaukee is sending protesters/rights protectors by bus to take part in Inauguration rallies in Washington DC, Milwaukee and Madison on January 21st, 2017. We have joined forces with the National Women’s March in support of their mission to ensure diverse voices are heard during these historic events.
By purchasing a poster you can become an active sponsor of the march. By carrying one to a march near you, you stand with our community!
