Get to Know the New You.
What if everything that made you feel like “you” was
portable? You can already get someone else’s eyes, heart, liver — even face or arms. But how about a brand new body altogether? Like any major technological
innovation, a full-body renewal would come with some serious ethical dilemmas and psychological challenges. How would your connection to your own
life change? Would your decisions seem so important if you could try just something different the next go-round? If time weren’t fleeting, would your relationships with your friends and significant others seem so ... significant?
Enter Joel and Alice. Married for 50 years, they've shared almost every experience of their mutual lives. Then, Alice "renews," choosing to have her mind transplanted into a body fifty years younger. Joel is supposed to follow suit, giving them a chance to live another full life together. But a "complication" threatens to unhinge all their best laid plans ...
This is the story that we — a crew of Bay Area filmmakers — have put our hearts and souls into sharing with you. And we've already filmed it! Our incredible crew included Academy Award nominees and filmmakers with backgrounds working with Woody Allen, Kevin Smith, the Wachowskis, and even on the Star Wars sagas.
Now we're in the process of finishing the movie. It's the longest mile of the journey, and we could use your help.
Support us in making a moving film that will make people think about how we look at getting old and being young. It is a crucial subject, and San Francisco, 2016, is the perfect time and place to bring it to life.
What We Need & What You Get
We're trying to raise $19,500 to finish this film. That might sound like a lot, but we want to do this film right. $19,500 is what it takes to commission an original score, license music, pay an editor, hire a colorist, do the sound mix, complete the special effects, master to tape, and submit to festivals.
In return for helping us out with this project — in addition to our undying gratitude — we're offering some fun perks to make it worth while, like original props from the film, DVDs, shoutouts in the film's credits, and tickets to the premiere.
Our Impact
We believe in the power of speculative science fiction. Movies like Her, District 9, Soylent Green, and Gattaca all explored topics in technology, culture, and philosophy, and made us think about how we interact with each other and what the future holds.
We believe that this film will contribute to that conversation.
Film takes community, and it takes support. It's expensive. It's time consuming. It takes a lot of talented people and a multitude of unimaginable details to make the world we created on the page become a reality. It's a kind of magic, really; a hard-earned magic. And we want more of it in the Bay Area. Help us build a community of artists, and makers, and work with us to develop a thriving local film scene here.
Risks & Challenges
Sure, there's always that worry — what if they don't make the film? Well, we're too close not to make it. We've invested too much already not to see this through to the end. We just need your help to put those last essential touches on it — to make this film as impactful and arresting as it can be.
The team behind Youth has experience completing projects and seeing them on to success. We've already brought multiple films to life to great acclaim, such as SLOMO, which premiered on the New York Times op-docs and screened all over the globe. The screenplay for our next project was shortlisted for the Sundance Lab. We have no doubt that Youth will garner similar attention and accolades.
Other Ways You Can Help:
For those of you who can't spare funding, there are so many other ways to help if you believe in this project:
— Spread the word the old fashioned way: tell your friends, family, grandparents, great-grandparents, partners, lovers, dog walkers, favorite baristas, frenemies, casual acquaintances, everyone and anyone. Heck, tell a stranger. Start a conversation and make a new friend.
— Spread the word the new-fashioned way: share this post on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, whatever new social media platform the kids are into these days. Like it, tweet it, poke it, snap it, heart it. Get it out there into the ether!
And that's all there is to it.
