The Project - Snow Carving Competition
A major part of our festival is the International Snow Carving Competition held every year! We attract internationally recognized snow carvers, and invite them to take a chisel at our most abundant natural resource... snow! Year after year we have rave reviews about the quality, consistency and abundance of the carving medium offered up here. Carvers express wonder at the fact that their sculptures, usually doomed to have a short life expectancy, will live on for the entire month, being appreciated by the public eye! The snow carving competition is an essential part of our festival, and an amazing free public spectacle. Most importantly, with your support, it has the potential to become an internationally recognized competition!
The SKWF team aims to make our festival as accessible as possible for the public! The snow carvings are purposely done outside castle walls, in part to provide carvers with ample space, but also to provide a 24/7 free public spectacle that decorates the backdrop of the frozen lake throughout the month of March.
In order to continue the growth of the carving competition, we need your support! We can see greater participation, more entries, and participants from every corner of the world travel to showcase their skills. We can put the SKWF not he map of international snow carving competitions! Not to mention the amazing draw that it will have for the entire Snowking Winter Festival, and the community around us. With your support, we can keep the event as a free public attraction, and we can bring more artists to Yellowknife to participate in the creative process.
What We Need
- Raising our level of professionalism, means meeting hospitality standards for artists and carvers. We need to purchase:
- We need to rent special equipment to prepare the material (snow) for carving
- General operational expenses for the event, which always add up quickly!
- To run any successful event, advertising is essential! We need to produce promotional material for advertising purposes (Videos, photography, graphic design, etc) and we need to promote our festival on a national scale to create awareness.
All of these elements are specific to the carving competition, and does not bring into account the long, hard and COLD hours that are put forward by an amazing team of staff and volunteers.
Amazing Facts about the competition....
- There are on average, 5 participants from 4 countries.
- 150 volunteer hours go into putting on just the carving competition!
- The volunteer hours that go into the creation of the castle, and the operational hours that go into the festival are in the thousands!
- Participants are honoured castle guests during and after the competition!
- The carvings stay visible under the Northern Lights for the entire month of March!
We need your help to grow this competition, and make it the event that it can be! Support us today....
