Since we reached our fundraising goal on February 7, we've been able to get a whole lot done at #futuresisterpie.
- We passed our rough electrical, mechanical, and plumbing inspections! Moved onto the final phase of construction.
- Our oven hood was delivered. I reached ultimate happiness.
- The team at LAAVU plus a bunch of SP volunteers painted/assembled the mosaic plywood tiles for the front of our counter. Gorgeous.

- It's a bird! It's a plane! It's an HVAC UNIT!
- Gold spray paint, everywhere.

AND THE TRUTH IS: We still have a whole lot to do before we open in April. Floors, paint, chairs, tables, and the list goes on. AND we still need to reach that stretch goal to fully complete the project.

The #futuresisterpie bakery is on its way to being totally built-out and we just need a little more cash. Naturally, we're throwing the biggest, longest, craziest dance party fundraiser in town! Join us at local record shop (and our West Village neighbor!) Paramita Sound for a whole damn day. Shake your tailfeather, eat cookies and watch Lisa collapse into a pile of dance dust right around 7am...only to get right back up and dance for 14 more hours. In July 2014, we began renting a former hair salon space at 8066 Kercheval in Detroit's West Village. Our doors will be open from 8am-6pm, six days a week. Sister Pie will use seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients to create sweet and savory food: pies of various sizes, cookies, breads, and breakfast pastries. We will serve breakfast and lunch – ranging from breakfast galettes, buckwheat porridge, and savory scones made with organic eggs to vegetable-packed whole grain salads and sandwiches. The 900 sq. foot storefront needs a complete renovation and kitchen build-out before Sister Pie can move operations from our current shared production space in Midtown.

Throughout the past five months, we've hosted "work days" in the #futuresisterpie space to prepare for construction. A community of pie enthusiasts and helpers have volunteered their weekends to tear down walls, rip up floor, peel wallpaper, pick weeds, and eat cookies. We are big believers in transparency and collaboration: join us, sit at our table, share some pie.

We've been working with local architect and designer
Laavu Studio, the dream team behind many beautiful Detroit spaces including
Nora,
Gold Cash Gold, and
Detroit Institute of Bagels. Together with Laavu, we're building a space that is open, functional, and beautiful.

Our projected start-up costs for the brick-and-mortar Sister Pie total $160,000.

We have an initial fundraising goal of $25,000 through the Fixed Funding option on Indiegogo - that means we MUST reach that goal to take home any of the money raised. If we hit that goal, we can then work towards reaching our stretch goal of $40,000, which would allow us to fully finish our build-out and open our doors in April of this year.

Sister Pie has grown from a home-baked, cottage food business to a licensed bakery providing online-ordered baked goods to hundreds.

Sister Pie believes that building healthy communities is a big part of Detroit’s bright future. From buying our rhubarb at The Greening of Detroit farm on Erskine to creating specialty pies highlighting Detroit-grown ingredients (like our coming-soon Ratatouille Pie using Grown in Detroit’s eggplant and zucchini), our bakery takes the farm to table concept into the hands and mouths of Detroiters. We will provide healthy, hearty meals made with food grown and produced within city limits, and won’t sacrifice anything on quality or taste.
Lisa began her culinary career alone in her tiny Brooklyn kitchen, filming an online cooking series called
Funny Side Up. After producing over 100 episodes and trying her hand at everything from
croissants to
fried chicken, she transitioned to the professional side of baking. She put in kitchen hours at two nationally renowned, cutting-edge bakeries, each run by a strong team of women:
Momofuku Milk Bar and
Four & Twenty Blackbirds.
Lisa moved back to Michigan in 2012 and launched Sister Pie out of her parents’ Milford kitchen for the Thanksgiving holiday. One year later, we moved into our current production kitchen and Anji Reynolds joined the team. In April of this year, we started selling our products at Parker Street Market in the West Village. Owners David Kirby and Caitlin James have given reports of people traveling to their shop (from across Metro Detroit) just to find Sister Pie treats. Our relationship has served both businesses well, and has been powerful proof that Sister Pie will thrive in that neighborhood. Opening our business there means joining a growing cluster, which helps to maintain and promote the growth of the Villages.
