The Story
A Gorey Demise Storybook is a project I'm executing for my 2012 Graduate Exhibition work for Simon Fraser University's School for Contemporary Arts. I've taken on hand-illustrating, printing, and binding a 28-page hardcover graphic-arts book that I will only make 12 copies of.
"A Gorey Demise" is a written piece composed and performed by Curtis Rx and Creature Feature Music. It pays homage to one of the literary influences of the singer-songwriter's projects. A Gorey Demise begs visual representation- challenge accepted!
The text chronicles, alphabetically, a cast of characters' twisted and grisly deaths. I will reinterpret the original text into a book that reads like a childrens storybook, but calls out a tension between its primary form and macabre content. I'll be illustrating the text with my own stylized type of characters I affectionately call Kriggles.
Drawing this kind of quirky, creative content impassions me! The process of turning the work into this small run of high-quality books is what makes the whole project a work of art.
How am I doing this?
I'm creating a series of original colour illustrations by hand in traditional media. The illustrations will be scanned and printed, then bound hardcover by hand. Ultimately, the books will be exhibited within the arts community and to project contributors. Producing a limited number of quality pieces will make each book a special sculptural work of art.
What I Need, And Its Impact
This is a not-for-profit project for my Graduate Exhibition piece. It will cost just over $1600 to do this. Your pledge will directly support making this piece, and paying for:
- $370 in Art Supplies: drawing paper, inking pens, and illustrative markers and cartridges
- $150 in Printing Paper: 100lb text-weight paper cut to size for printing the book pages
- $650 in Printing and Ink costs; printing 30+ different digital files larger-format in small runs is much more expensive than printing 300 copies of a single image.
- $470 Book Binding Materials and Labor Costs & Shipping Costs
Raising funds is critical to the execution of this project. As a student I earn limited income from 2 part-time jobs and working the hours to make money to pay for my project will rob me of the time I need to spend illustrating the artwork for the next 2 months. I need to complete the artwork in January to begin printing, and have the work bound in February. March 2012 is my cushion month to tie up loose ends, and the Exhibition is April 2012. Your pledge will enable me to do the part of this project I'm most excited about; bring my ideas alive through illustration, and create a beautiful piece of art.
What if everyone's as excited about A Gorey Demise Storybook as I am, and we overfund?
If we exceed the $1600 production cost goal, 2 things will happen; I'll be able to produce an even better quality final product, and I'm committed that if there are funds left after production, I will donate a percentage to Creature Feature Music's film and performance projects which are themselves in desperate need of funding.
Other Ways You Can Help
Another part of this artwork and project is sharing my process. You can be a part of this by sharing my Campaign, Facebook Page, Tumblr or other outlets with people you think would appreciate my quirky and fun art project.
