Overview
Finnish cinema is sorely lacking in queer films - in fact, none have ever been made. 'A Moment in the Reeds' (Tämä hetki kaislikossa) will be the first ever gay romance feature film made in Finland, focusing on the chance encounter between Leevi, a young Finnish emigrant returning home for the summer from his studies abroad, and Tareq, a recent asylum seeker from Syria who is looking to make a new life in Finland.

Short Summary

'A Moment in the Reeds' is a romantic drama about a chance encounter between two men from different cultures, timely in its subject matter and naturalistic in its narrative approach. Founded on the notion of intersectionality, the film seeks to provide visibility for and explore the experience of both sexual and ethnic minority identities in Finland.

YLE, Finland's national broadcaster wrote a story about us! You can read it here in English and here in Finnish.

SYNOPSIS:

Having moved to Paris to study literature, Leevi returns to his native Finland for the summer to help his father renovate the family lake house so it can be sold. The father and son have grown distant following Leevi’s mother’s death and Leevi’s coming of age, and the artistically minded son doesn’t meet his father’s expectations in terms of Finnish masculinity. Tarek, a recent asylum seeker from Syria, has been hired to help with the work, though he raises some suspicions in Leevi’s parochially-minded father. When Leevi’s father has to return to town on business, the two young men establish a connection and embark on a romance set against the idyllic Finnish summer. This unexpected encounter, however, is loomed over by the father’s return to the lake house, the continuation of Leevi’s studies abroad as well as Tareq’s complex relationship with his family in Syria.

WHY ARE WE MAKING THE FILM?

Unbelievably, Finnish cinema has barely touched upon the topic of love between men, and by 2016 there is a tremendous need for a Finnish LGBT drama. You can help us change this!

Meanwhile, after years of relative seclusion, the country has recently seen a large increase in immigration, and there is also a great need for more portrayals of migrant lives on film.

The main issues that the film will explore through its three characters are the intersections of masculinity, sexual identity and national identity as well as, for both Leevi and Tareq, the quest for refuge and fleeing one’s home in search of a more liberated life.

Whilst on the surface 'A Moment in the Reeds' is a naturalistic love story between two men - the first of its kind in Finland - on a deeper level the film will explore Finnish society from a number of perspectives - that of the older generations, that of an emigrant and that of an immigrant - as well as probing Finnish prejudices toward both the mainstream population and minorities.

Set on the summery lake Saimaa, the film will give this most traditional of Finnish cultural milieus a modern update and a queering.

The film will be bilingual, with the dialogue between Leevi and his father in Finnish and the dialogue between the lovers in English.

PRODUCTION

Filming will take place over two weeks at the start of August, with app. 12 shoot days. The film will be shot on location at a lake house in Southeastern Finland.

DISTRIBUTION

The film is expected to be completed in spring 2017, with the aim of being screened at the major Finnish film festivals as well as LGBT-film festivals around the world. We will also aim for a VOD-release and a Finnish TV broadcast.

What We Need

Whilst our cast and crew are generously volunteering their efforts, and the production has been designed with a low budget in mind, there are always some unavoidable expenses when it comes to filmmaking - and that is where we need your help.

The largest expense will be the hire fee for camera, lighting and sound equipment. Whilst we already have an excellent camera body (Black Magic URSA Mini 4K) in use, we need to hire all the necessary accessories (shoulder rig, tripod, monitors, a matte box and follow focus etc.) as well as cinema-quality lenses to achieve an image worthy of a cinema screen. Storing the digital footage will also take up great amounts of storage space (i.e. hard drives).

Funds will also be needed for production and costume design, feeding the cast and crew as well as for their travel onto the location in Southeastern Finland (train fares + car rental).

Any funds beyond our goal (of covering immediate production costs) will go toward post-production costs (editing, sound mixing, colour grading) as well as our festival budget (feature submissions cost as much as 100e per festival).

Tämä hetki kaislikossa - suomeksi

SYNOPSIS

Pariisissa kirjallisuutta opiskeleva Leevi on palannut kesäksi Suomeen auttamaan isäänsä kunnostamaan ränsistynyttä kesämökkiä myyntikuntoon.

ESITTELY

TUOTANTO

Elokuva kuvataan kahden viikon aikana (n. 12 kuvauspäivää) elokuun alussa.

Vaikka tuotannolla on jo käytössään laadukas Black Magic URSA Mini 4K -kamera, tarvitsemme normaalit lisävarusteet (kameran olkatuen, monitorit, matteboxin, yms.) sekä teatteriesitykseen kelpaavan kuvan saavuttamiseksi Cine-objektiivit.
