A non-profit for News in ASL for the Deaf
As you all know, I no longer provide videos to OIC Movies. I now provide free current news reports in ASL on YouTube. We've done shoots at a local college (see the picture), with members of the Deaf community participating.
Some viewers have asked for captioning for the videos we upload to YouTube. That takes a lot of time (translating from ASL to English, then captioning). It's also expensive, from $5 to $10 a minute, because it's translating from one language to another.
I don't have that kind of money, and it also costs to hold these free events for the Deaf community to preserve the history and culture of the Deaf. YouTube is free to all, and we want to make our videos accessible to all, both hearing and Deaf.
I would like to set up a non-profit so I can apply for grants for the captioning, pay for special educational events for the Deaf community, and also pay for future shoots to add to the archive of Deaf history and culture. I'd love to do documentaries too! Having a non-profit would also allow people to make tax-deductible donations.
I need approximately $700 to set up this non-profit (there is a $400 fee and other costs). Any remaining amount of money would be used to start paying people to do the captioning, and also pay for the next Deaf community filming event.
Your contributions will make this a reality. All contributors will receive an accounting of how the funds are used.
