A Christmas present for Alina
Linda Ly has been a valued member of our team for over 5 years now and her
daughter Alina was born with a condition that effects her liver. She has been
through many tests, and had multiple treatments both here in Vancouver and in
Edmonton.
Just
after her 2nd birthday in November 2013 she was officially put on the
transplant list in hopes of finding a successful donor. Linda and her family
explored many options over the previous months, including one of them having to
possibly donate part of their own liver, as a matching donor might be hard to
find.
Both
Linda and her family have been waiting patiently for the call that a donor has
been found, and on December 8th 2013, her Christmas wish came true.
Linda
and her immediate family were flown to the hospital in Edmonton and Alina went
right in for surgery at 6am December 9th.
Thus
far, the surgery has been a success, and she is currently recovering in the NIC
unit at the hospital in Edmonton under the watchful eyes of her family and
specialists.
This is where you come in
As you
can imagine, this has been both a joy, and additional hardship that this family
is coping with. Alina's
mother (Linda) and father have to stay in Edmonton with her for at least
three months, and maybe as long as one year. While waiting to hear, the
plan was to be able to work through Christmas so they could provide a great
Christmas for Alina, and her brother Alan, while also saving money for their
flights between Edmonton and Vancouver to continue treatment until a donor could
be found.
As you
can imagine, the decision to leave immediately once they got the call a donor
was found, would be an easy one. Without hesitation, they both took leave from
their jobs, to ensure they would not miss this opportunity, and their daughter
could be a happy, healthy baby, once and for all. Such a decision doesn’t come
without other consequences, and the financial toll this is going to take is a
significant one.
With
no income during their leave from work, they still need to cover:
- Travel costs getting their family back and forth from Vancouver to Edmonton when
needed while staying at the Ronald McDonald house near the hospital
- cost of temporarily living in a new city; food, gas, etc.
- trying to provide a normal Christmas away from home for their son Alan and for Alina
Though this is a difficult time of the year for everyone, with commitments both
at work and personally, as well as, taking the time to make this a memorable
time for those in each of our lives; if we can all take a few minutes and see
what can be done to help this wonderful family in their time of need it would be
greatly appreciated.
All
donations will go directly to Linda and her family, to help them absorb all the
additional costs at this critical time in her daughter’s life. Our one ask is -
Please give generously.
