Hello all! My name is Laila Franklin.

I'm originally from Washington, DC and a recent graduate from the dance department at Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

I'm currently in my first year at the Boston Conservatory, carrying a 3.7 GPA working towards my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Contemporary Dance.

This upcoming summer, I have the amazing opportunity to study at the American Ballet Theatre (home of the incredible Misty Copeland, first African-American female principal in the company's history) for three weeks in June in their Collegiate Summer Intensive.

About the Program

The program is designed for the mature artist, ages 17-24, involved in the pursuit of higher education. I will have daily technique in ballet and will participate in classes focused on ABT repertory, pointe work, partnering and modern dance. This is a chance for me to further develop my artistic talents in a challenging and professional environment, while intensively training with world-class ABT faculty.

The three-week program will take place at ABT’s 890 Broadway studios in New York City. I will have access to student tickets to select ABT performances during the 2016 Metropolitan Opera House season. The program, headed by Artistic Coordinator Ethan Brown, will include renowned ABT faculty and accompanists.

The Help That I Need

I have been incredibly blessed in years past to have scholarships cover major expenses of my dance training. Attending The Ailey School in the summers of 2013 and 2014 were covered by full tuition scholarships and housing stipends. Even my attendance to The Boston Conservatory is being funded by generous scholarships and continuous support from family and friends.

For this upcoming summer, I have not been awarded any scholarships. As a ballet dancer of color, this is a life-changing opportunity for me.  To study at a school of such international renown is excellent not only for my growth as a dance technician and artist but also an opportunity for me to make connections with other dancers as well as master teachers and choreographers that will be incredibly helpful down the line.

How You Can Help

I am asking that you give, whatever you can, to help me make this experience possible. No amount is too small or too large. Any and everything you can give will be greatly appreciated. Below, I have added a breakdown of when my goal funds will go:

$1125: This will cover the remainder of my tuition. We have been turning in payments over the past few weeks with a $375 deposit due on March 17th and the full and final tuition payment of $750 due on May 1.

$2000: This is the expected cost of housing. Housing is not provided by the program so we are looking to numerous options in the Flatiron District, Chelsea, and Gramercy Park areas of New York, within walking distance of the 890 Broadway Studios where ABT hosts their summer intensive.

$400: The remaining money will go towards basic living expenses. Since there are no meal plans provided, this money will go towards groceries for my three weeks in the city.

Thank You!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this! Thank you for sharing this campaign with people you know! Thank you for giving what you can! Thank you for taking time out of your day to support me in pursuing my dream!

Best always,

Laila Franklin
