An Idea & MIT: Help Me Fill It In
Have you narrowly missed a great opportunity and then wondered what else you could have done to change things? What that last move should have been to seal the deal? Well, that is how it is with me now. After a very selective process, I’ve been accepted to be at the MIT Global Entrepreneurship Boot Camp in Brisbane, Australia between March 26 and 31, 2017 (link to boot camp). To attend the bootcamp, I need to raise a total of $11,200 (US Dollars) to cover tuition, travel, accommodation and sundry expenses, which are broken down as follows:
There are lenders who have agreed at short notice to give the amount to me as a loan so that I can begin the process of securing my place for the training. I will pay them back and I’m hoping that with your help I will do it. So, PLEASE I NEED YOUR HELP.
Must I Go?
You are right. The sky will be there tomorrow if I don’t attend the bootcamp. But here’s the thing: it is on record that more MIT alumni-founded companies survive as compared to all new companies across the United States; for the same 10-year period of comparison, 70% of MIT alumni-founded companies survived as against 35% of new companies in the United States (http://news.mit.edu/2015/report-entrepreneurial...). The world faces several social and environmental challenges and I am committed to tackling them. To do this effectively as an entrepreneur however, I need to learn from successful models, and then adapt the lessons to suit local circumstances in Nigeria.

I’ve Got to Get My Act Right
I started a business in 2014 with the aim of finding new and practical ways of managing environmental and social issues. I hoped the business would really have taken off by now, but that hasn’t happened. Given the quality of training provided by MIT faculty, and the success stories that continue to be related by previous bootcamp attendees, I expect that my venture will markedly improve post-Brisbane.
The Idea
What would result from combining my idea with MIT’s training? Help me write the answer on the pages of history. Help Me Fill It In.
The idea that I shared with MIT as part of my application, involves using waste materials to make good quality products. The 56-seconds video above is a summary of the idea. You may find that the idea is not new; still it is not commonly adopted in my community. Hence my interest to implement it, as this would contribute to reduced loads of municipal solid waste, improved quality of the environment, and creation of new jobs.
Sure, you are welcome (and I encourage you) to replicate the idea in your country. Of course you can improve it and I too will love to learn from you.
About Me
Chiudo Jessy Ehirim practices environmental management in Nigeria. As a cohort 2 participant of the President Obama/USAID Young African Leaders Initiative programme that held in Ghana from October to December 2015, he worked as Research and Outreach Volunteer with US-based Leaders of the Free World (LFW). LFW (http://www.leadersofthefreeworld.org/advisory-b...) aims to improve positive outcomes for young Black males through a programme of training on leadership, self-efficacy, and international travel. Chiudo contributed (as ‘Jessy Hims’) to an e-consultation forum (http://www.fao.org/fsnforum/comment/7033) on “Youth – Feeding the Future: Addressing the Challenges Faced by Rural Youth Aged 15 to 17 in Preparing for and Accessing Decent Work” organised by FAO Global Forum on Food Security and Nutrition. He is currently volunteering as Country Manager – Nigeria with US-based Climate Scorecard, a project that monitors how the top 25 greenhouse gas emitting countries implement the Paris Agreement on climate change (http://climatescorecard.org/category/nigeria/ng...). Chiudo holds a Bachelor of Science in Pure and Industrial Chemistry, and a Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Management.
What Would You Get Back?
The value you place on finding solutions to environmental problems and helping others succeed, as well as the good quality of your heart sure exceeds the extras that I have offered. However, I will be pleased to give them (see the box ‘Donation Levels’). Though there are donation levels, I’ll appreciate whatever amount you are okay with and able to give.
Are You Not Able to Give?
You wish to donate but are unable to do so. I understand. But you know what? You still can help by telling friends and others in your network. There just may be someone who is able and willing to assist.
THANK YOU for taking the time to read this and considering what you can do to support me as I make that last jump to cross this hurdle.
