Todos sabemos que en Venezuela están desapareciendo los espacios para el periodismo independiente. Los periodistas han sido blanco de intimidación y agresión. La compra sistemática de medios de comunicación tradicionales han ido callando las voces disidentes.
Hoy, conseguir información confiable sobre lo que pasa en Venezuela es más difícil que nunca. Enfrentamos un proceso de desinformación sistemática. Este uno de los momentos de mayor oscuridad para los periodistas independientes en Venezuela.
Está claro que las viejas formas de financiar al periodismo de calidad en Venezuela han fracasado. Llegó el momento de innovar.
EFECTO COCUYO acepta ese reto. Ofrecemos un espacio para el periodismo libre, profesional, investigativo, sin estridencias ni guabineos.
Somos periodistas. Estamos dispuestos a asumir el riesgo de emprender una plataforma de información e investigación independiente, sin partidos políticos o poderes económicos que nos avalen.
EFECTO COCUYO busca tornar un momento de oscuridad es un momento de luz en Venezuela. Sabemos que periodismo libre es una causa, por la cual vale la pena luchar.

Nos proponemos redescubrir valores básicos que se han ido perdiendo: investigar, escudriñar, cuestionar y siempre, siempre verificar antes de publicar.
Creemos en los usuarios conscientes como parte fundamental del ejercicio periodístico. El respeto y la interacción con nuestros lectores serán un eje transversal de nuestro periodismo.

EL EQUIPO:
Nuestra directora, Luz Mely Reyes, es una veterana de mil batallas periodística. Ex directora del diario 2001, ex jefa de la Unidad de Investigación del diario Últimas Noticias, Luz Mely ganó el Victoria Awards en 2014. Ha develado hechos de corrupción en casos como el Proyecto Irán-Venezuela y el secuestro de Rodrigo Granda. Ha sido editora de coberturas electorales como TuVoto2012. Por su activa participación en defensa del periodismo, especialmente cuando en 2013 fue citada por la Fiscalía a declarar por un titular de la primera página del diario 2001.
Nuestra Jefa Editora, Laura Weffer, ha sido parte de los equipos de periodismo de investigación más importantes de medios impresos en Venezuela. Laura ha ganado dos veces el Premio Instituto Prensa y Sociedad, la primera vez en 2006 y una vez más en 2014. Ha ganado tambien el premio de cobertura Gabriel García Márquez, y una mención especial a su trayectoria, por parte del premio Maria Moors Cabot de la universidad de Columbia, en reconocimiento a sus trabajos, las distorsiones de la investigación asesinato del fiscal Danilo Anderson y el asesinato de Basil Dacosta.

THE PROBLEM
Venezuela’s media landscape has changed sharply over the last two years. Private media that once challenged the government and exposed corruption have watered down their coverage in the wake of secretive changes in ownership. Imagine if 60 Minutes, instead of making public officials and corporate moguls squirm on camera, began airing softball interviews that cautiously ducked controversies. Or if dozens of critics of Barack Obama were suddenly dropped from the Op-Ed pages of The Washington Post or the New York Times. This is the reality that Venezuela’s news consumers face today. Hundreds of reporters unwilling to work under such conditions have quit their jobs in search of new opportunities. This is one of the darkest moments in Venezuela related to free journalism practice.
WHAT WE OFFER
Efecto Cocuyo is an independent Venezuelan media platform that delivers critical reporting and hard-hitting investigations in an era of media complacence and growing limitations on citizens’ ability to stay informed. Our team combines the energy of young writers with the experience of award-winning veteran journalists to cover stories that are increasingly being ignored by corporate media. These include the growing challenges for Venezuelans to obtain basic goods, the growth of poverty after more than a decade of prosperity, and the elusive search for justice by relatives of 43 people killed during opposition demonstrations in 2014.
We've set out to run a community-driven newsroom that *seamlessly* integrates social networks into the reporting process by using our Twitter and Facebook communities to generate story ideas and keep us up to date on breaking news. This structure is the inspiration for our name, Efecto Cocuyo, which in Spanish means “Firefly Effect.” Our platform is the product of millions of tiny sparks, which together can illuminate an entire nation. Our strength-in-numbers approach is also reflected in our reliance on crowd funding as a means of financing. Using platforms like IndieGoGo helps ensure that we are not beholden to economic interests.
Efecto Cocuyo is committed to holding powerful public officials accountable in a system that increasingly protects them from public scrutiny. We are equally committed to criticizing opposition leaders who have repeatedly set back our country’s democracy over the years through maneuvers including a 2002 coup, an oil-industry shutdown, and a boycott of parliamentary elections.
THE TEAM
Our founders are two such reporters. Luz Mely Reyes is a relentless investigator who has broken news on Venezuela’s cooperation with Iran and the activities of Colombian guerillas in the country. In 2013 she was arraigned by state prosecutors after President Nicolas Maduro lashed out at a story about gasoline shortages published by daily newspaper 2001 where she was worked as Editor in Chief until she decided to start Efecto Cocuyo
Laura Weffer, who in 2014 led an investigation of murders by rogue intelligence officers that paved the way for arrests of security officials, left the country’s best-selling newspaper Ultimas Noticias after realizing this sort of work was no longer welcome there.
.In 2014 Luz Mely received the Victory Award for excellency in political journalism and Laura has twice won the IPYS Prize for investigative journalism, as well the Gabriel Garcia Maquez Award for best coverage in 2014 and the Maria Moors Cabot Prize recognition for live achievement.
INVEST IN INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM
Today Venezuelan journalists committed with their role require the support from citizens from different latitudes in order to preserve the right of Venezuelan citizens to be informed about public issues which are being censored.
Efecto Cocuyo relies on individual donations to maintain our operations, but we need funding for special projects. This year’s parliamentary elections will be the first since private media began tacitly siding with the government. We want to hire reporters to provide post breaking news analysis, investigative report and comprehensive content about crucial information. We also want to build a data-reporting investigations team that can uncover corruption by state officials. And we are planning to hold a series of workshops for young reporters with a focus on the provinces, where the country’s economic crisis is being felt the most.
RESOURCES ASSIGNMENT:
I: 15K $ will be the annual sustenance for the platform and the base team
II: 15K $ will expand our Cocuyo Network at national and international frame, in order to assign investigative reports in remote and border states. Not only it will be a network for journalists but activists and supporting citizens also
III: 10K $ will boost an information/complaint community network, and we will envision new ways to reach vulnerable audiences
IV: 10K $ will sustain the special coverage of the National Assembly elections for 2015 in Venezuela
V: 15K $ will thrust a pilot scheme in data journalism
VI: 10K $ will funs the summer school for young journalists
VII: 5K $ for experimentation and generation of informative apps
