THANK YOU to Everyone who Contributed!!!
With your amazing help, thanks to claiming artistic perks and pre-ordering books during our initial campaign, we now have the funding necessary to finalize everything and send the files off to have the books printed next month! Also, thanks to Indiegogo's flexible "In-Demand" program, we can continue to conveniently take pre-orders for certain available perks here on our campaign page through April.
Contributor credits will be limited to those who contributed during the initial campaign window so that we can have those names in the book in print as promised. However, if you are just now checking it out, you can still reserve a book! That way, when the very first edition copies come back hot-off-the-press in April, we will have your info on file and will promptly send your way!
Same goes for T-shirts, Postcards, the Map, and any other listed Artwork perks from featured artists, while supplies last!
If you have any questions or are interested in Sponsorship opportunities, please reach out to atxurbanart@gmail.com
THANK YOU again for all your generous support!!
About The Book
Decades of artistic evolution on the streets of Austin, Texas have culminated in ATX Urban Art, a first-of-its-kind book showcasing the city’s graffiti, street art, murals, and mosaics from the 1950s to today.
Featuring 100+ local artists and 1000+ photos across 500+ pages, this book shines a spotlight on Austin artists at a time when the rapid growth of our city makes the preservation of the works from early pioneers and those carrying the torch today so important.
Whether you know about these subcultures or not, ATX Urban Art will open your eyes to the depth of art in Austin and the urban artists behind the work. Each chapter includes an introduction to the artform, some historical notes, insights into the various styles, explanations of the vernacular, and most importantly, dozens and dozens of spreads for our featured artists.

All money raised will go toward the following expenses:
- Production (researching, writing, editing, etc)
- Design (500+ unique page layouts, cover design, campaign branding, and more)
- Professional photography (1000+ photos featured, several thousand more taken in the process)
- Printing
- Perk production

If you’re interested in getting more than just the book, check out our PACKS to make a more significant contribution and get more bang for your buck. These are bundles that include the book plus exclusive perks like limited prints of featured photographs, urban art postcards, artist-designed stickers, and more! Plus, as a special thank you for believing in the project, you will GET YOUR NAME PRINTED as a contributor in the book’s acknowledgments.

More Details About the Book
All four chapters will educate and inspire even the casual reader. Austin residents and visitors alike can gain a deeper understanding of the city as well as the visual artists and vandals behind the ever-evolving tapestry of urban art in our streets.
Our first chapter, Graffiti, is an eyesore to some — a sign that the system is failing or property values are falling — while others see the artistic expression, bold political messaging, and relentless work ethic of brave writers risking life and freedom. Here in Austin, graffiti has sprawled across the city since SKAM and SEK put up pieces in the early 80s. From tags and throws to intricate pieces and awesome productions, we’ve highlighted some of the city's most prolific and influential graffiti writers over the last 40 years, cataloging these moments of existence before they’re painted over and gone forever.

Next, Street Art encompasses many techniques and textures like stencil art, pasted posters, stickers slapped on utility boxes, sculptures glued to walls, and suspended fiber art that all come together to form a collective urban collage. Street artists often use the urban environment to make their voices heard through political commentary, memorials, positive messages, or simply colorful artwork, and we're giving them another platform to do just that.

The third chapter, Murals, encompasses everything from elaborate advertisements to community and cultural narratives. Muralists have been carving out unique styles in Austin since the 50s, coupling their artistic vision and community support with clients who give them free rein to put up meaningful work on their walls. Over the years, it has become virtually impossible to drive around the city without seeing complex colors and compositions splashed across walls at every turn. Ranging from the most recognizable and Instagrammable South Congress murals of today to the culturally important Chicano murals on the Eastside, this chapter showcases the diverse range of artwork and talented artists brightening our city in a big way.

Finally, there’s our fourth chapter, Mosaics, arguably the most laborious and permanent of the urban art forms. Many of these skilled artists and artisans work with volunteers from the community to complete large-scale, ambitious public art projects meant to last for decades. But the medium of mosaics is also diverse, with other artists opting for smaller fine art pieces or guerilla installations on the streets.

Brought to you by the artist and author J Muzacz and his tight-knit team of dedicated photographers and designers: Justin Ebel, Zoe Axelrod, and Tony Moreno, alongside dozens of valuable contributions from participating artists, photographers, and documentarians, ATX Urban Art promises to be the most definitive urban art book of our city for years to come.
Risks & Challenges
Thankfully, the biggest challenge, creating the book, is largely behind us. The next big challenge now is printing and distribution.
Don’t worry, though, ATX Urban Art is getting made no matter what. Worst-case scenario, a lack of support may result in us spending a few more months gathering the funds to complete the production, but you can rest assured that you’ll have your book in hand as soon as possible.
