What if you could make a difference and help save our place on the planet today?

What if the future of your children, their children, and your great-grandchildren was dependent on your making the right choice…right here, right now? Would you do it?

Because that’s the big idea. Sometimes the biggest ideas are the simplest. Your gift of $50 today will plant one Champion Coast Redwood clone in 2015. Our goal is to plant 2000 of these trees in the coming year.

People around the world are starting to understand that climate change is not only real, but its impacts are imminent and will become more severe unless we make big changes now.  They are struggling to come up with solutions as natural disasters, extreme temperatures, and water shortages threaten people and species everywhere. At Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, we feel that one solution is far simpler than most think.

But first, a little about us...

About Archangel Ancient Tree Archive

Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is the first organization in the world that locates and vegetatively propagates the world’s largest and most iconic trees. AATA is creating living libraries of old-growth tree genetics by cloning superior old-growth "Champion" trees through traditional and advanced horticultural propagation for the purpose of future research and functional reforestation.

The mission of Archangel Ancient Tree Archive is to:

  • Propagate the world’s most important old-growth trees before they are gone.
  • Archive the genetics of ancient trees in living libraries around the world for the future.
  • Reforest the Earth with the offspring of these trees to provide the myriad of beneficial ecosystem services including sequestering carbon dioxide; essentially a global warming solution.

We now have 2,000 Champion Coast Redwood cloned saplings ready to plant, but need your help.

The Archangel team has expended tremendous time and effort over the past six years to locate a wide variety of the largest and oldest ancient redwoods from across their 600 mile range. We have carefully and with great risk collected the specific tissue needed for the cloning process from the tops of these old giants, developed and then replicated the cloning process, and have raised these clones to an age where they are able to be transplanted back to a suitable forest setting. These ancient giants provide the exact replica DNA of the original old-growth parent trees to the world for planting.

The saplings are growing robustly in Archangel’s Copemish, Michigan facility, and since they are now at their peak planting age, we need your help to get them from Michigan to appropriate planting locations around the world. These special clones are direct genetic copies of the original old-growth giants and once planted, will help genetically strengthen and expand the current range of Coast Redwoods. It's a crucial step in our plan for restoring the global forest.

  • Every gift of $50 helps to plant one Coast Redwood in the 2015 planting season.
  • Your gift of any size will help us reach our goal and begin to reforest the planet with these giant trees that can make a significant impact on climate change, and to allow us to continue to ramp up to produce more of these special trees.

Perhaps the most efficient tree planting possible is to reforest the Earth with the oldest and most effective carbon filters alive—the ancient Coast Redwoods. With the work of Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, this is now possible.

We just need your help.

About These Special Second-Generation Tree Clones

  • Redwoods grow faster than almost any other tree in the world, obtaining three to ten feet of growth per year. A normal Redwood can easily reach 65 ft. in height in 20 years.
  • Our special clones are direct copies of these unique giants that tower up to 35 stories and have lived thousands of years, as well as some of the largest and oldest redwoods that ever lived - stumps of trees that have been cut down a hundred years ago but still retain the genetic heritage of the original ancient trees.
  • Why focus on ancient trees? All memory is trapped in DNA, the older the better. It is spelled out in the molecular machinery of a tree and that tree’s relationship to a forest and the forest’s relationship to all life around it. Each event of the past finds its molecular home in the strands of DNA to be represented there, possibly forever. This is called epigenetics.
  • Redwoods safely sequester carbon more efficiently than other organisms on Earth. A typical 25-inch-diameter redwood can store about a ton of carbon.
  • Each Redwood matures to create unique ecosystems that include species of insects, birds, reptiles, and other organisms that exist nowhere else in the world. So while you’re saving the trees, you’re saving the natural life that coexists with them as well.
  • Archangel takes special care in planting and monitoring each clone in their tenuous first years. Our Redwoods are replanted in areas expected to be cooler than their current range through a process called “assisted migration” for a better chance to survive in our rapidly changing climate.

Meet Some of the Champion Trees

Our living library has been collected from Champion trees and stumps of some of the only remaining old-growth Coast Redwood forests!

We've also cloned the Alonzo Stagg Tree, a Giant Sequoia that's over 3,000 years old.

Give a gift for the planet!

Every $50 plants one Coast Redwood in the 2015 planting season. Your gift of any size will help us reach our goal and begin to reforest the planet with the giant trees and make an impact on climate change.

Please join us by making a gift today. You can make a big difference by being part of this big effort to be the change you wish to see in the world.
