Short Summary

Executive Director Debbie Huckaby founded Birds Of Paradise Sanctuary & Rescue, Inc. in November 2011 after recognizing the dire need for such a facility to aid in the overpopulation issue with parrots in the United States.  After the rescue of 16 Parrots from deplorable conditions and otherwise certain death from an abandoned house in Troy Ohio, it became clear that the need for a safe haven for parrots was not only needed but was a necessity.  This rescue mission was well publicized and followed by parrot lovers from all over the world.  Many reached out by phone, email and writing letters to county officials and the Governor to save these parrots.  Ms. Huckaby was chosen because of her dedication, commitment, passion and ability to provide a nurturing lifelong habitat for these parrots.  Partnering with Golden Gait Trailers in Concord NC., who supplied the transportation and funded the rescue, this mission was carried out with professionalism and  appreciation for the lives at stake.

Ms. Huckaby has invested over 15 years in rescue organizations and charity events.  In 2007, Ms. Huckaby was the Chair for the Capital Toyota/March of Dimes Celebrity Golf Tournament and was instrumental in raising over $50,000 for this event.  Ms. Huckaby has been involved with Parrot Rescue for the past 10 years and toured many facilities developing strategies and recognizing strengths and weaknesses.  Ms. Huckabys plan is to develop a working sanctuary with a business model for a successful endeavor for many years to come.

Birds of Paradise Sanctuary & Rescue, Inc.’s current vision is to complete the necessary preparation and construction to establish a permanent facility and expand our resources and capacity in order to strengthen our services and increase the number of parrots, individuals, and families we can serve. Our goals are accomplished by implementing a proven successful methodology. Ongoing evaluation of current practices assures progress and cost-effectiveness. Fundraising is a continuous ongoing effort and our organization will also strive to implement annual membership fees paid by supporters and previous parrot owners. A grant or donation from Benefactors will assist in vital expansion for our organization’s offerings. Total estimated cost for the initial phase of proposed sanctuary is $845,000.  This funding will be used for costs related to the purchase of property to house many more parrots in need as well as construction, administrative, personnel, and program expenses.  Any and all contributions are tax deductable and are greatly appreciated.  Please help us to “Build our Parrot-dise”.

The Impact

Birds of Paradise Sanctuary and Rescue is a safe haven for abused or unwanted exotic birds, regardless of species, age, special needs or behavior issues. We do not buy, sell, or breed birds nor will we adopt to anyone who does. The birds placed within our care will receive the proper medical care and behavioral evaluations on a regular basis. They will live in aviaries where they can fly free, with natural vegetation, fresh air and sunshine. They will live as close to free as possible while in captivity and still enjoy the daily interaction of only the most loving caregivers.

Birds of Paradise Sanctuary and Rescue will work with these birds to provide rehabilitation for those that have suffered due to neglect and abuse. We will teach them trust of humans once again, through our gentle process of daily interactions and by providing them with loving communication and positive reinforcement.

Birds of Paradise Sanctuary and Rescue will actively work with legislators to enact laws that protect the parrots in both breeding situations and as companion parrots. We will help to raise the awareness about the plight and over population crisis of captive bred exotic birds. We will be a voice for the birds and help to promote unity within the avian community.

Birds of Paradise Sanctuary and Rescue will help to coordinate and network with other parrot rescues and sanctuaries throughout the U.S., and to help place birds who are in need of a safe haven. The overpopulation crisis is growing and rescues facilities in every state have to turn away birds daily or take in more than they can adequately care for. We will promote teamwork for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Birds of Paradise Sanctuary and Rescue  will also provide educational resources and professional advice for all those wishing to learn the proper care of exotic birds. We hope to help dispel the myths that have been spread by the pet trade industry that has led to the suffering and over population of these magnificently intelligent creatures.

Risks & Challenges

Birds of Paradise Sanctuary & Rescue, Inc. is confident in the continued interest in funding for our facility and its offerings. Our organization is supported primarily by personal contributions and membership fees. We are implementing a “sponsor a bird” program that will allow individuals to support a specific bird and receive updates on their life in Paradise.  In addition to these monies, the organization will continue to increase the amount of unrestricted funds through fundraising events. We will also be applying for foundation grants, corporate funding and soliciting local donations and support from the surrounding communities.

It is our ongoing goal to provide financial stability to the organization by identifying funding sources that share our passion to provide these much-needed services for abused and neglected animals.

It was decided to follow the above course of action based on the professional experience and expertise of Ms. Huckaby, as well as the success of similarly structured organizations.

Other Ways You Can Help

The organization will invite local individuals, groups, and school representatives to attend educational sessions at our facility. Birds Of Paradise Sanctuary & Rescue, Inc. will provide lectures and informational workshops to educate the public. Individuals from the community can also come to our facility and get a hands-on experience with the animals.  Birds of Paradise Sanctuary & Rescue, Inc. will operate its educational program with volunteers who are knowledgeable about parrots and exotic bird care.

Individuals that can not contribute monetarily or personally can be best utilized by helping to educate and share our mission with others in hopes to eliminate or greatly diminish the abuse, neglect and other issues regarding our feathered friends.  You can also contribute by sharing our site with others that may be in need of placing their birds or donating items for our auctions that benefit the rescue.  We are always looking for dedicated individuals for making toys, cleaning cages, socializing the birds and giving tours.
