We’re unique…we’re geeks! And we’re an autism family—Jodi, Jonathan, Molly, and Dave (not in photo)—who views our family’s ‘life on the spectrum’ with a positive outlook and a sense of humor. Jonathan has Aspergers Syndrome and discovering how to help him thrive has been our family’s journey, an adventure filled with challenges and triumphs, struggles and breakthroughs. He is our quirky hero and role model of perseverance and determination. We started sharing our experiences on a blog and through children’s stories in our own creative, geeky way to change the public’s understanding and make a human connection to autism—to see possibility, not disability.

What began as a creative idea turned into an initiative for change and our founding of Geek Club Books , an autism charity. We tell the stories of autism to ignite hearts and open minds so those with autism are given every opportunity in this world to shine.

It’s birthday time for us—not only are we celebrating our personal birthdays but our Geek Club Books nonprofit is one year old! (Brief pause while we do our awkward dance moves)

Our giving community has made it possible for us to develop two autism story apps, awareness and tolerance curriculum, and empowerment programs for autistic children and adults. Now that’s really something to celebrate! And it’s already making a difference…these messages represent the kind of feedback we receive:

“Thank you for your work. I have a 12 year old son with autism. It’s people like you that make things easier on parents like me.”

“Writing for Geek Club Books every month has given me a voice and an opportunity to express my unique views of the world as an autistic individual.”

“It is good and greater than ever because it is about superheroes like me.”

“Tolerance, understanding differences and bullying are topics embedded within this lesson-filled story app.”

Nothing would mean more to us this birthday season than to be able to continue our mission. With your help, we can break the stigma and end misperceptions surrounding autism. When you say “yes” to our Birthday Geeks for Autism celebration campaign—YOU will be making a difference by helping us:

• Expand our positive autism awareness initiatives
• Develop creative, entertaining and informative autism story apps
• Make it possible for us to hire autistic writers, copy editors and artists
• Get our apps and ‘acceptance’ curriculum into classrooms

We’re here to celebrate what makes all of us unique and send out a message of hope and optimism. So let’s get this party started! (Your donation is tax-deductible-Woo Hoo!)
