Short Summary
World Aid Ventures and Institute for International Service Learning (based in Lincoln Nebraska) is proud to be a fiscal sponsor for
Café RED.
Café R.E.D. is a
social enterprise restaurant and cultural center in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. From their beginning in 2010, with formation of a restaurant they have
pursued the support of local Guatemalan enterprises that provide our
food and products; promoted Guatemalan culture by hosting music, art,
film, and festivals, and convened conferences, talks, and workshops for
the education of all interested persons. The name R.E.D. encompasses
all these activities: R= Restaurante, E= Escuela (School), and
D=Despensa (Fair Trade Store).
We work to eliminate the need for our people to migrate through
creating sustainable economic and educational opportunities and cultural
pride here in Guatemala. Café Red has created a network of regional suppliers. We employ organic and green methods of production eliminating
dependence on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. We provide a fair
trade market where producers pay their workers just wages and retailers
make only a fair profit. Trade is local. There are no international
wholesalers or producers. Beneficiaries are solely Guatemalan.
What We Need & What You Get
We need $5,000 to empower and grow the social enterprise, to reinforce and grow our educational projects, increase our support of local producers, and supply proper training for fiscal responsibility in the social enterprises we support.
You get unique products from some of the producers we support, and you get to invest into one of the few innovative, socially responsible and culturally transforming businesses in Guatemala.
The Impact
Café RED is a
social entrepreneurship venture, seeking to address the difficulty of return migrant reintegration; supporting the local economy by buying and marketing local furniture, food and fair trade crafts; providing a space for people to trade their experience with local economic experts; and working to build and strengthen a local sustainable economy. Your small investment will allow us to expand into offering education opportunities for youth.
