My Story
Ever since
I was a young girl, I dreamed about working in a orphanage and caring for
babies that had no one to love them. This year, I have been given the opportunity
to do volunteer at the Door of Hope Children’s Mission in Johannesburg, South
Africa. I will be staying for two months, with most of that time working. I
will look after up to twelve babies at one time, with shifts of ten –thirteen
hours long. I will do a mixture of day and night shifts.
I have applied and been accepted. The only thing left is to raise the funds to
go. My father has kindly paid for my flights on the condition that I seek sponsorship
to pay him back. My flight from New Zealand leaves on the 22nd of
November this year. That’s right, just a few weeks away!
The Impact
My impact
will probably be mostly on the lives of the children I will care for. I will have the chance to love precious
babies, a lot of which have been abandoned. The situation for babies in South
Africa is desperate. A lot of mothers simply can’t afford to look after their
children, so they give them up to hospitals or orphanages. Other babies are
just left to die, dumped in toilets, dump sites or even public parks.
What I Need
I need $3,500
USD for my trip away. Most of that will
go into the flights to get there, the rest into accommodation, food, travel
insurance, and a Hep A vaccination, and any personal effects I will need to by
when I get there.
