Buffalo may be famous for snow BUT we will create a Blizzard of Blossoms in spring!
Last year we started the First Annual Buffalo Cherry Blossom Festival. Now we are planning another celebration of early spring starting May 2, 2015. Buffalo deserves a celebration after snow melt time. The Festival includes Films, Music, Dancers, Parades and Tree Planting events. Our focus is to to build a citywide carpet of blossoming cherry trees which will eventually create blizzards of petals in our glorious May breezes.
Today we are creating a variation on our blizzardy notoriety by planting a vast number of cherry trees which will eventually create a breathtaking storm of warm beauty. Our Buffalo spring festival will follow Washington DC's National Festival just in time to attract visitors who want to extend their early springtime pleasure with a visit to Niagara Falls, and Buffalo's beautiful Japanese Garden within the Fredrick Law Olmsted parks system, the first of Olmsted's renowned plans.
This campaign is to raise "seedling" funds to buy 100 blossoming Cherry trees and to invest in community education about the planting and care of the trees until maturity. Funds raised will buy wholesale trees, support the Buffalo Olmsted Conservancy, pay entertainers and support the beautiful Buffalo Japanese Garden of Buffalo.
This year we aim to sell two varieties of blossoming cherries to all who are willing to plant and care for trees where they can. These cherry trees will be planted by private property owners, in corporate landscapes, by city utilities with overhead wires (cherries are low growing trees which are suitable for cityscapes) and urban gardeners. The Olmsted Conservancy gardeners will present tree planting and care events.
We will promote events during blossom season. We will celebrate spring beauty in Buffalo NY.
