Hello! How have you been? 

We are Jakarta Performing Arts Community, a non-profit musical theatre community based in Jakarta. Consisting solely of volunteers, our community has been a platform to learn more about musical theatre and its craft. It has grown into a platform to explore the inner workings of a theater production --where we get to learn more about the performance and production aspects. It has also become a platform to explore and reflect on current social issues through our performance.

In 2017, we examine the rampant prejudice plaguing Indonesia through the star-crossed love story of WEST SIDE STORY. Last year, we brought DREAMGIRLS, a tale of female empowerment and solidarity, to life.

This year, we are proud to announce our upcoming production, COMPANY: A Musical Comedy, and explore the meaning of marriage and companionship in an urban society.

Sounds familiar? 
Everyday, we are faced with such personal questions from our peers. In our rapidly developing world, perhaps those fleeting moments of intimacy  are our way to grasp for a human connection.

COMPANY embodies our most intimate and universal theme yet: human relationships. It tells the story of Bobby, a young single man living in New York. Surrounded by married friends and exciting flings, Bobby contemplates what company truly means in a lonely life in the city that never sleeps.

We believe that COMPANY is as timely as ever. The musical is set in New York City and explores modern issues in a modern setting, from the values of marriage to defining sexuality to encountering gender inequality to the ups and downs of modern friendships. All familiar topics for city dwellers.

With all the bad reputations surrounding Jakarta at the moment, we feel that it is important to change the narrative and shed some light on a different side of Jakarta. It is one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in Asia, in which modern performances are popular among the globalized, urban population. English is more widely learned and spoken among our audience, and they are very keen to be exposed to more English-speaking entertainments.

On top of that, this will be our first production to incorporate live orchestra as our accompaniment. It will be our biggest challenge yet, but with your help, we can prepare our talented and hard-working volunteer cast and crew for the next step of our community’s growth.

Putting together a stage production is never an easy task. There is a multitude of creative, technical, and managerial aspects involved.

Our community supported by donors, fundraising efforts, and unrelenting support from our audience. However, the resources to stage a production in Jakarta are limited and expensive --from rehearsal space, set buildings, sound equipment, to venue hire.

Although we are a non-profit theatre community and not a professional theatre company, we believe that it is important to acquire the license to this musical as the proper practice in staging other people's works. We feel that we need to set a good example for other budding theatre communities in Jakarta.

Our community also consists entirely of volunteers who contribute their time and energy to a project close to their hearts. Therefore, we would like to ensure that our team is well taken care of and has a great time learning and growing with us.

The money pledged to our Indiegogo campaign will go toward purchasing a license from Music Theatre International.

The license will provide us with the right to perform COMPANY, as well as essential performance materials including the script and the score for our director and actors. 

Any additional money will go into our production budget, further divided into rehearsal venue, performance venue, set, lighting, costume, make up, and other needs. 

COMPANY is a profoundly entertaining and thought-provoking piece and we hope to do it justice. Our artistic vision requires a thorough attention to each production element. 

By donating, you are not only helping shape COMPANY into the best version we can. You are also pushing our team of volunteers to greater heights by enabling us to improve our craft for future productions. With our volunteers dedicated unrelenting energy and countless hours into our community, we strive to provide more extensive trainings --not only on performing, but stage management, set design, costumes & makeup, and firsthand learning experience in how to operate sound and lighting within what a professional theater production is like. Our community may not be able to give financial compensation for their hard work, but we can provide a proper learning opportunity about musical theater that we hope will be useful for our members beyond this community. Above all else, we want every single person in our community to grow with us.

We also would like to extend our contribution to the society beyond our productions. The proceeds of this production will be donated to Sahabat Anak, a non-profit organization that provide education for marginalized children. Additionally, we are planning to hold workshops and training sessions where we can share the joy of self-expression and the beauty in creativity with our underprivileged friends.

We believe that art should be accessible to all, and that every single cent counts in providing that opportunity for those who need it.
