The Filmmakers
Steve Vanderheide and Chad Weber
- We are two filmmakers who are passionate about telling real stories.
- We live and work in Northern Colorado.
- We found a story that is so worth telling, that we were willing to put our own time and money into it.

The Documentary
Dreama Walton, the subject of the film, is an ultra-marathon runner, full-time worker and a mom. She has to juggle so much in her schedule to be able to train and compete in races that are as long as 100 miles in under 30 hours. Yes, that's right - 100 miles. Dreama was offered a spot in The Western States 100, the oldest 100-mile race in the world, in Olympic Valley, California.
This story follows her training as she gets ready for Western States, but more importantly, it dives in to the life of Dreama, as we explore her motivation for entering willfully into struggle. Why would somebody ever sign up for something so difficult? What keeps her moving? Who are the people in her life that inspire her to continue running? How is she able to train for something so hard with so many other aspects of regular life seeking her attention?
Our goal is to create an 8-15 minute short documentary, that explores these questions, and culminates in her performance at The Western States 100 race this June 26th, 2021.
We Need Your Help
- We are looking for funding to be able to travel to California and film The Western States 100 Race.
- In addition to this, any extra funds will go toward additional production and post-production costs so that we can complete the film, as well as helping to cover costs that we have already put into the project.
Why Help
Much of Dreama's story pulls from her difficult past, as we talk about how she had to care for herself and her sister who had Spina Bifida. We are interested and moved by the story of how Dreama runs with her sister in mind - someone who was never even able to walk. We also want to tell about how she received so much encouragement from so many strangers over the course of her life, and believe that by donating, you will be helping us help inspire others to do the same.
Risks & Challenges
Documentary filmmaking is difficult. You have to be in the right place at the right time, and there is only one opportunity to "get the shot".
- There will be a lot of logistics planning as we look over the route, to see all the opportunities to film Dreama as she crosses our path during the race.
- This is a non-stop, 100-mile race, that could take up to 30 hours. This means filming in the heat, filming in the weather, and filming at night. We will need to film in-between naps, and stay alert enough to get coverage of both Dreama, and her crew.
- Amidst all this, we need to make sure we are getting the "heart" of the story, by spending time only on the worthwhile moments.
- We will be sticking close to Dreama's crew, both for advice, as well as for covering their part of the story throughout the race.
