Enliven, Self-Care Centre on Your Cancer Journey
We need your help now to get Enliven up and running for early 2017. With your help we can start offering amazing courses and workshops to people living with cancer and their caregivers as early as March.
A cancer diagnosis leaves a patient in a vortex of uncertainty, isolation and despair. Friends rush in with casseroles and lasagne but few can talk about the elephant in the room. The patient feels responsible to stay positive, up and to be a fighter. One person tells them to put frankincense on their skin and another says that is wrong and harmful. Chemotherapy is exhausting and difficult and leaves you with a foggy mind. Where can you feel safe? How is empowerment and self-determination even possible? It is all exhausting.
How many friends have you seen nursing a cancer patient but never taking care of themselves because they just can’t make the time? One friend had to drive 1.5 hours just to attend a grief support group after losing her husband. How many don’t make the drive and just get lost in the grief?
Where does a health care practitioner go to grieve? Where do they fill their tank?
It is time that our community had a place that was specifically devoted to navigating the confusing and isolating journey of a cancer diagnosis. It is time that our community had a place for patients, care-givers and health care workers alike to be supported and given the space to talk, ask questions, learn and just be regardless of the severity of the diagnosis.
This place will be called Enliven.
The purpose of Enliven is to provide pro-active self-care services (including programs, workshops and events) that support people living with cancer and their care-givers, to navigate their cancer journey in positive and productive ways, reducing the social isolation that comes with the disease diagnosis.
We equally serve and create community for health care practitioners by providing a place for them to come together, recreate, replenish, and engage in dialogue about ensuring cohesive and aligned service provision into our community, together.
We will serve the area between Sundridge and Gravenhurst, Parry Sound and Haliburton with our hub being in Huntsville. Workshops and courses will span topics as broad as financial management, pharmacist as ally, alternative therapies, arts as healing, grief support and more. We will host gatherings and retreats for health care providers of all disciplines related to cancer.
Help us to get started. Help us to support this community.
