How do you go from “fantasy novelist” to “nonprofit founder”?

14 million dollars in, we’ve got a pretty good idea.

Let’s rewind to 2008. (Think the Beijing Olympics, the release of the Android operating system, and the subprime mortgage crisis. Hey, two outta three ain’t bad.)

2008 was also the first anniversary of the publication of The Name of the Wind — a fantasy novel by Patrick Rothfuss.

The book had garnered some good reviews and a growing fan base. People followed Pat on social media and read his blog.

But he had no real concept of how big his audience was… until he held a photo contest and received hundreds of phenomenal entries.

It was a bit of a wake up call. And it made Pat think: How could he use this reach to do good?

That holiday season, he decided to hold a different sort of contest. He asked his fans to donate to his favorite charity, Heifer International. In exchange for their generosity, he’d put their names in a hat, pull winners, and send them books from his own collection.

Why Heifer International?

Pat chose Heifer International because they were his mom’s go-to charity. She liked how smart the organization and its key people were. How its programs sparked lasting, positive change. And how Heifer worked with the leaders of the communities it helped.

The more Pat looked into Heifer and its programs, the more he saw how sensible its “teach someone to fish” philosophy really is. Thanks to its focus on education and its “passing on the gift” philosophy, Heifer has a deep and direct impact on the lives of families and communities around the world.

Getting started: Our first fundraiser

Pat figured that his holiday fundraiser would raise $5,000 or so, and offered to sweeten the deal by matching every donation dollar for dollar. You can maybe guess what happened…

He raised over $50,000 (and almost went bankrupt making good on his promise to match donations). He wanted to keep going, but realized that he might be in over his head — so he enlisted the help of some friends, and started Worldbuilders.

We’ve kept building ever since.

Fast-forward to now. Worldbuilders now has 10 employees and an online store where people can buy officially licensed merchandise from Pat’s books (naturally, profits go right back towards the nonprofit work).

We’ve also been working with more authors and creators! These days, we either carry official merchandise or handle distribution for some incredible creators, including: Kevin Hearne, Holly Black, Mary Robinette Kowal, Jim Butcher, Julia Maddalina, Martha Wells, B. Dave Walters, and more.

We’ve also focused on partnering with immediate-response charities like Mercy Corps, Project HOPE, and GlobalGiving, and education-centric organizations like First Book.

And still, at the end of every year, we encourage people to donate to Heifer International by throwing names into a hat and sending out prizes. It’s the same thing Pat did at the beginning — only now we send out thousands of prizes every year.

Now it's time for Geeks Doing Good.

This is a week where you can help us recharge our capacity to do the work for the rest of the year.
