Caitlin's Story

Caitlin is a graduate student at Boston University beginning her second year of a Masters of Divinity program.  She is studying to further her already amazing gifts for innovative and creative ministry.  To help her get around Boston, and relax in the outdoors a bit more in her Sabbath time, Caitlin began searching for a bike over the summer.  During a trip to REI she fell in love with this Cannondale that had everything she needed and wanted for both riding around Boston, and getting outside and relaxing on the trails.  But it was far too expensive...

At the end of the summer, Caitlin's bike went on a super sale.  It was still expensive, but after getting some amazing career news, she went for it.  She decided to invest in a bike that would last, and be everything she wanted.  But it was already sold out online.  And in most stores.  We finally tracked down one bike, in Reading, MA.  It may well have been the last one in her size in New England.  We rented a ZipCar, drove up, and picked up her new bike.  Caitlin was in love.  We brought it home, added her rack to carry her panniers, and some lights to keep her safe, and she was off and riding!

Until the afternoon of Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013.  Caitlin's beautiful bike was stolen in the middle of a sunny afternoon, from right in front of her school, on an extremely busy sidewalk.  There were dozens of other bikes parked there, and the thieves took Caitlin's.

The Ask

To get Caitlin back on a bike that is close to what she had, we need $750.  As we mentioned above, Caitlin found her bike on an amazing sale, but that sale has ended, and it looks like stores aren't stocking that bike anymore.

There are still some great end-of season sales going on out there, so the sooner we hit our goal the better chance we have at finding an equal replacement for Caitlin.  Also, she would get to enjoy some fall riding before the long Boston winter sets in.

The Impact

This little campaign isn't just about buying Caitlin a new bike.  Caitlin had something very emotionally valuable ripped away from her.

Think about how powerful it will be for her to get on her new bike, bought by her community, and be able to ride again.  It will be like she's being hugged by every one of you each time she rides.  And that's awesome.

Other Ways You Can Help

As we said, this campaign isn't just about buying a bike.  So it's not all about the money.  Here are some other things you can do:

  • Share this with people who know and love Caitlin, are part of the cycling community, or just believe in restoring some faith in humanity.
  • Give a hug.  Caitlin could use a few.
  • Send a cute picture of animals or card - she especially likes puppies and bears.

The Party

Once we've bought Caitlin a new bike, we're going to host a christening party for her and her new bike.  For those of you in Boston, Caitlin is offering to bring out all of her Southern Hospitality and cook up a feast (which you know will be amazing!).  For those of you outside of Boston, we'll find a way for you to participate.
