THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!

We at GrandTen Distilling would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all of the friends, family, and spirits fans that helped to fund our Bar 383 project! We were able to meet our original goal in just half the time allotted, as well as raising an additional $3,770 that will go towards our stretch goal. That brings the total amount raised to a whopping $23,770!

We have already begun the process of making the first still to glass bar in Massachusetts a reality. We are currently in conversation with architects, contractors, and suppliers to begin transforming our front of house space from the ground up.

We will be in contact with all of you who got perks about shipping them or picking them up at the distillery.

Who we are:

GrandTen Distilling is your local small batch distillery. Since 2012, we've been committed to producing spirits that are handcrafted from locally sourced ingredients. From our distinct Wire Works American Gin to our New England-style Medford Rum, we’ve taken the time to do things the right way. We are focused on our craft above all else. The spirit industry is full of slick stories and fantastical histories: we just want to make something that tastes good and is accessible to all the spirit and cocktail enthusiasts in our fair city. We've been featured in Edible Boston, the Wall Street Journal, and some really awesome blogs.

What we are doing:

We’re building a space where people from all over Boston can come, kick back, and enjoy our spirits in good company; but, we need your help! With your backing, Bar 383 will be the first of its kind in Boston.

Bar 383:

We’ve already transformed an old manufacturing space into a modern distillery. Now we hope to offer a craft cocktail bar, where spirit lovers will enjoy a relaxing environment, sample our wide range of products, and sip some truly awesome drinks. In the end, the space will include a fully functioning bar serving a wide array of drinks displaying GrandTen's full line of spirits, as well as special spirits only available at the distillery. What is unique about Bar 383? You will be drinking spirits next to the still that made them! Every drink imbibed will feature spirits and ingredients made in-house.

What we need and what you get:

We would like to transform our dry bar, currently used for Saturday afternoon tastings, into something much more open and inviting to the neighborhood. To do that, we need at least $20,000 for parts, equipment, and labor, as the age and design of the building are proving to be difficult obstacles to overcome. The money you donate would go towards installing modern bar equipment and the requisite hook-ups, while preserving the historical character of the space.

With your contribution, we will continue transforming this space into a comfortable, speakeasy-style showcase for our spirits. We’ll use your donations to undertake some much needed renovation, adding hot and cold water hookups, drain pipes, bar fridges, ice bins, and all of the amenities of a modern, craft bar, giving us the ability to serve you the highest quality cocktails.

As for incentives, we wanted you, the donors, to fully enjoy the fruits of your investment by experiencing Bar 383 firsthand. In some cases, we are directly translating your donation money into gift certificates and tokens that can be redeemed at the distillery or at the new bar when it is finished. Essentially, you will be pre-ordering time and products at GrandTen and Bar 383: the more you invest, the better the deal is for you! Each level of investment will come with cool GrandTen swag, so you can show off how spirit savvy you are to all your friends.

For those of you who are more interested in cool merchandise or can’t make it all the way to Boston, we’ve included some special GrandTen Distilling branded items that will be unique to the IndieGoGo campaign.

Risks and Challenges:

Since we moved into this space in 2011, we’ve been steadily improving it to suit the needs of a modern, craft distillery. We poured new concrete floors, installed a beautiful and functional all-copper still, and brought in modular storage solutions for our products. Then we moved to the front of the house, building a sleek concrete bar from scratch to serve our tasting room and putting in racks of barrels so you can watch our spirits age to perfection.

Our next step is to redesign the front of our distillery, creating what we are calling the Bar 383: a cocktail bar that will showcase our current line of spirits and provide a staging ground for new or experimental products. To accomplish this, we will have to put in new plumbing and all the cool equipment you see behind the bar at your favorite cocktail spots.

Our building is old. As such, it takes a little more time and effort (and money, of course) to ensure that we are doing things the right way, while preserving the integrity of this 150+ year old structure. In addition, we are dealing with codes and regulators that will be judging the space along the same lines as a brand-new restaurant/bar. Bringing such an old space up to code requires a lot of hard work and patience, as we navigate the complexities of Boston regulations. But, when all is said and done, we are going to have a wonderful new space and our building is going to have had some much deserved work put into it.

Wider Impact:

We’re proud to produce high-quality spirits here in South Boston. We are trying to carry on the spirit of local manufacturing that has shaped our neighborhood for 200 years and helped to nurture the kinds of self-reliance and independence that define the attitude of Southie.

Our building, located at 383 Dorchester Avenue, was constructed in 1852 and originally used as an iron foundry. In the resulting 150 years, the space saw many lives as various manufacturing and industrial businesses occupied it. We at GrandTen Distilling took over the space in 2011 and have worked hard to extend its existence into the 21st century.

The improvements funded by this campaign will not only help to create a new hangout for the neighborhood, but will increase interest in South Boston as a destination for people looking for quality food and drink south of the city. We want to help rejuvenate this section of Southie by upholding its history through maintaining and improving existing structures, rather than tearing them down and building new ones.

Spread the word!

Having a fully functional cocktail bar inside a distillery would be a first for Boston. If you want to see it happen, if you've ever wanted to sip a spirit next to the still that makes it, help us out by spreading the word!
