Dear friends,

Greetings from the Petén jungle of northern Guatemala, where as FARES – USA, we are conducting intensive scientific research and saving some of the most amazing natural and cultural wonders of our planet.  Our work is focused in the Mirador Basin, known as the Kaan Kingdom, where the cradle of Mayan civilization is seated.

As FARES, we provide a strong multidisciplinary approach and employ unique conservation methods on ancient Maya architecture. We have conducted a comprehensive scanning of the area utilizing Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), a surveying method that employs laser light to map the terrain’s surface. Through LiDAR, we have characterized an extensive amount of pyramids, palaces, canals, causeways and agricultural terrace. This technology has helped us confirm that the cultural and natural marvels contained herein are unique in the world.

The Mirador Basin´s value goes beyond being an archaeological and cultural wonder. It is located within the Mayan Biosphere Reserve and is one of the largest uninhabited areas of rainforest in Mesoamerica. The forest covered area yields a net oxygen production. Estimates indicate that the Mirador Basin forest provides oxygen for more than 25 million people annually. It holds six different types of ecosystems and harbors a diverse variety of species including the largest percentage of jaguars in the American continent.

The natural and cultural system of the Basin forms a marvelous shield that can provide employment, strong tourism revenues, and new conservation models that protect, expose and consolidate world class ancient structures and provide refuge for biodiversity in the region.

The 864,868 acres of the Mirador Basin are at risk. The forest and the diverse habitats, as well as the archeological heritage, are in danger of disappearing due to extreme deforestation and poaching. During the months of March and April of 2017, Guatemala lost 22,000 acres of pristine tropical rain forest along the western edge of the Mirador Basin. Pressure is mounting and we need your support now more than ever.

We need your economic support to help us conserve the biodiversity and preserve the archeological monuments of the ancient Kaan Kingdom for centuries to come.

Give us hope for the long term conservation of the Mirador Basin by donating to FARES. Any amount counts.

Your money will go to the protection and consolidation of the Popol vuh Frieze.

Help us now to protect the cradle of the Mayan civilization through your tax deductible donation!
