You use Wikipedia. We all do.

But did you know that Wikipedia doesn’t cover subjects on Africa nearly as well as it does on all the other parts of the world, including Antartica! (*) ?
The Wiki Loves Africa competition is a fun way to change that. Each year the project asks people across the continent to grab a camera and upload photographs, video or audio around a theme.

This year that theme celebrates the exciting colours, fabrics, designs, designers, jewellers, craft makers and pattern makers of cultural fashion and adornment
. It celebrates the ancient traditions of local communities and their influence on local, regional and global fashion trends.
The project is a two-month competition which starts on the 1st October and will end on the 30th of November 2015. A jury will select the best entries from across the continent.

To have Africa represented in all its richness and diversity requires amazing, inspiring images. To get the best representation through Wiki Loves Africa, we have to attract Africa’s best professional and amateur photographers. We need to offer quality prizes.
For more information, see our website http://www.wikilovesafrica.org

(*) Antartica - this is true story. There are more articles on the English Wikipedia about Antartica than about any one country in Africa.

Who's behind it?

Wiki Loves Africa is organised by the Wikimedia community and supported by the WikiAfrica project, with help from local Wikimedia chapters or Wikimedia user groups

The 2015 edition is facilitated by two wikipedians

What We Need from you ?

Most of our project has been funded by Wikimedia Foundation (the organisation that hosts Wikipedia). However ... the prizes for the contest were not included in the grant request. We figured that we would find another way to fund those.

The prizes for the contest have been selected and will be the following ones:

  • 1st prize: a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 + an Africa-published book + Mystery gifts from the Wikimedia Store + print of the participant winning picture
  • 2nd prize: US$300 Amazon gift + an Africa-published book + Mystery gifts from the Wikimedia Store + print of the 2nd prize picture
  • 3rd prize: US$200 Amazon gift + an Africa-published book + Mystery gifts from the Wikimedia Store + print of the 3rd prize picture
  • Community Prize: US$200 Amazon gift voucher + an Africa-published book + Mystery gifts from the Wikimedia Store + print of the Community Prize
We are looking for US$1200, to cover the gifts costs but also to help with the remaining costs (including shipping and handling of gifts...).

The Impact

Last year, Wiki Loves Africa: Cuisine had 6,116 images entered by 873 unique contributors from 49 countries! We want to have a lot more entries this year! You can view the winners of Wiki Loves Africa 2014 here

Photo contests are well known on Wikimedia platforms - you might have entered one yourself? The first "Wiki Loves X" event was Wiki Loves Art in 2009, followed in 2010 by Wiki Loves Monuments, an international photo scavenger hunt to ask people worldwide to photograph heritage sites. Wiki Loves Earth is another one of those contests.

Images uploaded into the competition can be found here: Images from Wiki Loves Africa 2015.

But Wiki Loves Africa is not just a photographic contest. It is a way for the Wikipedia volunteers to make contact with new enthusiasts. We hope that the events that will take place in several countries. Typically, it might be conferences to present Wikimedia Commons, photo hunt parties or mass-upload sessions. We expect that events will take place at least 8 countries: Tunisia, Egypt, Côte d'Ivoire, Uganda, Nigeria, Cameroon, Tanzania and Algeria. Hopefully more ! Follow-us on Twitter or Facebook to know more on the matter !

What if we collect less ? What if we collect more ?

But we would like our best and most involved participants to get nice gifts to thank them for the sharing and this is why we are asking you to help us. We are approaching sponsors, but if less money is collected than the $US1200 we can cut down on prizes.

If more money is collected than the $US1200, it will be used to fund additional outreach events to be organised by the local teams.
