Help Joe Go Pro!
Hey there! I'm Joe Kit.
You probably know me from:
1. my involvement in the community project, Faces of KL;
2. my work with Coffeeticks.my where I write daily about X reasons why Najib/Nicol David/Anwar/Mahathir is a Badass.
This is my story on how I found my passion in photography.
When I was 16, I was attending conferences and winning 'awards' hoping to change the world and bail my dad out from bankruptcy. But I was never making an impact. The things I did felt as empty as a trumpet on an empty field, loud but to no affect.
Awards were plain papers and recognition was forgotten just days after the newspaper features.
In 2013, I had my first taste of photography when my project: Faces of KL, ran out of available photographers. My mom surprised me one day with a Canon EOS 100D, with money she somehow scraped together with my dad, because somehow she knew I was going to love doing this.
And boy was she right.
Then on I never stopped shooting. I realized the phenomenal beauty of capturing moments and immortalizing people. How a few simple clicks could mean so much in retrospect, and how my simple act of talking to strangers on the streets; would come out to highlight the unseen side of KL.
I never stopped learning. I kept asking questions and I kept shooting, and shooting, and shooting. I shot so much that my SD card's sides got worn out from the amount of pulling it out and slotting it in between exports and imports. I kept shooting to the limit of the 100D, pushing its noise performance, its shutter speed and using awkward postures to compensate for slow shutter speeds when the noise couldn't keep up.
Since then I've shot a myriad of icons including the MP Ramkarpal Singh and our National Squash Icon Nicol Ann David.
Knowing that my parents could never afford to get me a better set, I saved up every penny to get an upgrade. I relied on trade ins and currently I'm using a budget EFS 10-18mm lens, which I got for a really cheap price thanks to my aunt's phenomenal bargaining skills; And also a second hand 24-105mm F4L which I managed to scrape together using my surplus from my full time job plus trading in my kit-lens. All these, coupled onto a super awesome Canon 100D.
And I'm not lying; this kit is definitely JUST enough for my needs for now, but not enough for what I'm about to undertake.
In the next four years I will be travelling to San Francisco, Berlin, Beunos Aires, Istanbul and even Bangalore under the Minerva Schools at KGI, and I definitely am planning on documenting every corner of it; but I can't do it with a camera that can fail me any second under harsh conditions. The 100D is simply not equipped for the load I'm about to undertake.
With the situations above noted, I concluded that the best budget option I have now is Canon's budget Full Frame camera: The Canon 6D. It's got reliable weather sealing and the full frame specs will compensate for A HUGE MILE in terms of image quality. It's noise performance is such a huge step forward that I would no longer have to resort to leaning my shoulders on my belly to hold my camera still so I could expose the photo properly at the right shutter speed with minimal noise.
So how much will this cost?
Well, about 1500 USD.
Can I afford 1500 USD?
In all honesty. No.
So why am I asking for 1000 USD only?
Cause I can still afford to work out the remaining 500 USD, and I don't want to be just another guy waiting for 100% handouts, I believe in hard work;
Minerva has been really kind in understanding my family's financial conditions and offered a huge scholarship; however I still have plane tickets to worry about within the next three months and also the deposit, as well as my student visa application I have to pay off before I fly off for Adventure Time. And no, I'm not going to ask my parents for a bail out, not this time. My mother has done enough to get me the 100D, and I will appreciate that to the end of time, but that entry level beauty will soon have to retire; so I can move on to build a proper professional career with a professional camera.
What will I do once I get the Canon 6D?
1. I'll travel the whole world with it.
2. The 100D will go to my mom/my sister, who both are HUGE fans of photography.
3. I will be able to accept a much much larger variety of professional shoots over time, given my efficiency would greatly increase.
4. I would be able to document not just the Faces of KL, but the Faces Of The World.
5. I will do private shoots for everyone that donates above a hundred USD.
6. And hourlong shoots for anyone who throws in 50 USD.
So that's that.
I wouldn't have come here if I didn't really need help, and I'm inviting all of you to come take this next step in my passion with me.
Let's go pro.
