ROOTS Young Adult Shelter is a non-profit organization that provides safe shelter for homeless youth in Seattle. Located in the basement of the University Temple United Methodist Church, ROOTS provides shelter, warm meals, laundry and other services every night of a week, serving more than 500 young people every year. However, this year, we are facing major adversity. ROOTS needs your support to continue operating to protect and assist homeless youth.

Ever since ROOTS started back in 1999, we have always been striving to make progress, to make ROOTS a better place for more people. We began as a small program of the University Temple United Methodist Church, with only 20 beds, opening 1 night per week. Now, as the biggest youth shelter in Washington State, we are able to accept more than twice as many guests as we did when we started, opening every night of a week.

Yet, as mentioned before, our future is in jeopardy due to the significant decrease in funds from the government. This January, Human Services Department changed its fund distribution system to a competitive bidding, first of this scale in the past 10 years in which they would judge different shelters based on how many guests transitioned to permanent housing and 4 other criterias. ROOTS won the funding for the “emergency shelter” category, but lost funding that currently supports our case management sector. So where did the fundings go? Most of the funding shifted away to rapid-rehousing program, a short term rental subsidy program that aims to quickly stabilize homeless families.

With this recent anti-shelter movement, homeless youth are being left out, virtually ignored, as without the funding to run case management, we can not help our guests get into housings. However, we are determined to keep ROOTS the way it is, because we are more than just an “Emergency shelter”, and that's what makes us different. We provide meals and beds, but most importantly, we provide a platform from which our guests can reach higher. ROOTS stands for “reaching out of the shadows”.  At ROOTS, homeless youth are not just numbers in statistics, but individuals with faces who are treated and respected as humans. Our case management team is what allows individual guests to pursue different paths, by giving access to different resources to get employed or to get housings.

We would not have been able to come this far without the help from the donors and the volunteers. We started off as a scrappy little basement program, but now, with you and other supporters, we are not in this alone. Please help us reach our funding goal of $10000 so that we can continue fighting for homeless youth.
