INDEPENDENCE = LIFE + 4 PAWS
A service dog helps someone with physical challenges lead a more independent life. A Deputy Dog is a service dog you train yourself - to do tasks you could use help with, allowing you to do more things and go more places.
Just a few of the things a Deputy Dog might do: provide balance and stability when walking, push/pull a wheelchair, carry items for you, get/retrieve things, open/close doors, help you get up from a chair or bed, help you get dressed, let someone else you need assistance.
A Deputy Dog is a fully certified service dog, and is legally permitted to accompany you anywhere - from school, work and social activities, to airplane travel.
MLDD is all about people helping each other. We all know someone, or likely will someday, who is physically challenged by a debilitating illness or injury. Or a returning veteran who was hurt in the line of duty, or simply someone suffering from the effects of getting older.
Our goal of $5,000 is the cost to train, equip and certify one Deputy Dog team. Like Liam and Virgil.
Liam is partnered with Virgil, a Golden Retriever mix we saved through rescue. Liam was born with Friedriech’s Ataxia, a rare congenital condition. FA didn’t manifest itself until Liam was 16, but is a progressive disease which causes severe walking difficulty, and often total paralysis later in life. Liam recently graduated from college and is training his Deputy Dog first, then will hit the job interview circuit with Virgil by his side. Liam wants to “fight off the paralysis for as long as possible.”
