My name is Heidi Ropa and I am Coordinator for the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee Haiti Project which funds a school in Jeannette, Haiti, up in the mountains outside of Miraguane.  Through my work with staff at St. Marc's School, I have come to know families who lack access to housing, clean water, and food.   I recently learned of an exciting opportunity for 10 families who do not have structurally sound housing.  A non-governmental organization called Food for the Poor will build homes in the community for 10 families at no cost if Pere Jean Lenord Quartorze, the Episcopal priest I work with in the village, can provide legal documentation for the 10 families to build.  The total cost of securing the documentation is $3,500.

One of the families in need of secure housing has a teenager in 10th grade named Sherley, who I have come to know (she is one of 8 kids).  In November, as Sherley and I sat on the porch in the evening she showed a visiting nurse and I a rat bite she had on her arm.  It is common for children in Haiti to be bitten by rats at night.  A new home made of cement with a door will make a significant difference for Sherley and her family.   No child should be vulnerable to rain and rodents as they sleep.

We wonder how we can make an impact in a world of such deep disparities in resources. Your donation will make a difference in the lives of 10 families by lifting barriers to housing. I  will be traveling to the village of Jeannette two more times this year and can share with you photos of the homes and families your donation will help.

Even if you can't donate to this need you can share this story with other people and perhaps they will be moved to help Sherley's family build a safe home.
