FAME Africa
Thank you for visiting my fundrasing page! I am excited to have the opportunity to go to Karatu, Tanzania in East Africa to volunteer with a foundation that I am so proud and honored to work with. I will be working with the Foundation for African Medicine and Education (FAME) whose mission is to enhance the quality of medical care in East Africa as well as to educate the local staff and community!
I will be spending the month of September in Tanzania where I will work as a Nurse Practitioner six days a week alongside Tanzanian physicians and nurses in what Dr. Frank started as a community clinic and has now grown into a small hospital with inpatient beds, an operating room, an ICU, and a laboratory. We will have limited or no access to such things as X-rays, CT scans, or many diagnostic tests, which will challenge me to use my clinical skills to diagnose and treat based on a history and physical exam (real old school medicine!). FAME treats more than 10.000 patients a year from over 100 different tribes. In addition (and what I am most excited to be a part of), FAME has a mobile medical unit (a 4-wheel drive bus) which sets out for 10 days a month to conduct drop in clinics in distant villages whose people rarely have access to medical care. They see often 100 patients a day with a large number of those patients being children under the age of five!
In addition, FAME has asked that I prepare power point presentations to facilitate educating the Tanzanian staff on areas of my expertise. I look forward to sharing my knowledge with them about Trauma and Emergency Medicine as much as learning about African medicine, community, and cultures!

Why I need your help
Because FAME uses it's funding to help continue to grow the inpatient and outpatient programs in Karatu, it depends greatly on it's volunteers to operate. I am proud to be one of those volunteers this fall and feel that I will be a part of FAME for many years, if not my lifetime. In order to Volunteer at FAME, there are costs totaling $2,860 for my flight, immunizations, licensing, and room and board. For this I am hoping that with your help I can raise enough money to cover the funding it will take to get me to FAME. Any dollar raised above the total volunteer costs will go directly to FAME for supplies and equipment. My hope is to raise over $5000.
To illustrate how far the dollar goes in providing medical care in Tanzania, $2000 would cover FAME’s total costs (salaries, labs, and medicine) to treat 550 children suffering from intestinal worms. The same amount can treat 88 children diagnosed with pneumonia.
