UPDATE! Lucky is open! Stop by 168 Avenue B!
Read on if you're interested in the backstory:
Hi, my name is Abby! But I bet we've met.
- Owning a bar is a dream come true. This fundraising campaign is my way of involving my extended community in the bar's success.
- Ever since the first time I stepped behind a bar, I've wanted to own one. I've had a lot of jobs in my life; bartending has always been my favorite. Open a bottle of beer, get a buck. Meet strangers. Make money to be at the bar instead of spending it. Orchestrate everyone's good time!
- I've lived in New York City for 30 years and really done my homework. Now it's time! Ladies and gentlemen, meet Lucky!
- Every donation will be well rewarded! From a $5 donation for a beer pog to $1000 for a personalized bar stool, everyone will get something concrete (well, maybe liquid, but you know what I mean) in exchange for participating!
You Need a Drink!
This campaign is to raise awareness about Lucky and get YOU involved in its success. All donations will be added to my already existing funds. This is happening! Papers have been signed. The bar opens as soon as renovations are finished.
- The money for the purchase of Lucky has already been secured. Any funds raised here will pay for upgrades and improvements, such as:
+ a new air conditioner and ducting
+ a shade structure for the backyard
+ heaters for the backyard
+ landscaping for the backyard
+ video projector to show movies in the backyard
+ improved storage in the basement
- Yes, ultimate goal has already been met and the opening is imminent. You're all here to help put the frosting on the cake. Or maybe the head on the beer. And to help get the word out!
My Life's Dream, Your Friday Night
Yes, this bar is my life's dream. But what's it to YOU? If you live in New York City, it's a new bar to check out, with both standard and whimsical drink specials, an eclectic jukebox, a wide selection of regional beers, deliciously infused vodkas, and mocktails for those who don't do the booze thing anymore, all served in a comfortable, neighborhood bar ambience by friendly (and slightly snarky) bartenders who've been around the block. If you don't live in New York, now you'll have another reason to visit!
- The East Village has become like Bourbon Street. My bar will be a refuge from the stumbling insanity.
- Manhattan has about a million bars. But every single one is different. Even bars that are chains differ. This city is is a series of neighborhoods, each with its own vibe. It isn't difficult to imagine that my bar will be different as well. It will have my personal imprint.
Why me? And why now?
No, I've never owned a business before. But man, have I been learning! Watching, interviewing, asking questions...soaking it all in. I've also spent the last seven years as Manager of the extremely productive and happy crew of Burning Man's DPW Sign Shop. I've honed my skills and know how to motivate people! I realize that this isn't an easy business and know that there will be many challenges and obstacles. I'm definitely prepared.
- After 30 years of producing and promoting events in New York City and tending bar, from First Avenue to Black Rock City, not to mention the many more years of sitting in bars and observing, I know what it takes to make people feel at home. This will be a bar I believe you'll want to call home.
- The most important quality that makes me so ready, right now, to do this is age. Yup, maturity does have its perks!
- I've watched many people do it right, and wrong, and have learned lessons from every one. I've also gained more experience working with people (and managing them) over my past seven years with Burning Man. Best of all? I know what I don't know. So:
- I have hired an advisor who owned her own bar/nightclub in the East Village for the past decade and served on the local Community Board for seven years.
- Every aspect of this business has been mulled over and thought out...for decades. The only thing missing now is YOU!
"But Abby, I'm Broke!"
Believe me, I get it. I've been living on the edge for so long I feel like a tightrope walker! If your pockets -- and your bank account -- are empty, don't sweat it. Come by the bar for a visit and I'll buy ya a beer!
- If you can't afford to contribute, maybe you could "boost the signal" by posting a link on Twitter or Facebook. Indiegogo has some cool share tools!
- Need a job? Helping me run the joint would certainly be support.
- Send your friends! It's gonna take a city to make this go!
- Or just wait till you're more flush, then come in for a drink! Tip your server!
Still Wondering If You Should Donate?
We have reached our goal! WOOOT! But you can still donate! Let's play a game! If you can answer "Yes!" to any of these questions, the answer to "Should I donate?" is "Definitely!"
- Have I ever served you a drink? In any bar. Ever.
- Have you served ME a drink?
- Was the first thing you thought when you heard I was buying a bar, "Maybe she'll give me a job!"?
- Was the first thing you thought when you heard I was buying a bar, "Maybe she'll buy me a drink!"?
- Do you wish you had a comfortable bar to hang out in? One that isn't full of 20-somethings swiping on Tinder and spilling their overpriced muddled cocktail? This'll be it.
- Have I ever booked you for an event? Paid you for anything? Supported your project?
- Do you like to sing along to music you love?
- Have you ever enjoyed any of my parties or events?
- Have I ever supported one of yours?
- Does the idea of me owning a bar make perfect sense to you?
- Have you ever been fired and wished you worked for yourself? ME TOO!
