Amidst of a frigid Chicago
winter, the students of the Illinois Institute of Technology's Design-Build
Studio are studying a set of islands in the Asian Pacific. Not because they are
dreaming of summer, but because in the coming weeks and months, it will be
their task to design and build a small health clinic in a remote village in
Jabung, Indonesia. Since 2005, the students here have put together a diverse
portfolio of built work, both locally and internationally, and in the Spring of
2015, the next page will be written.
Who We Are
We are a collection of 4th
year undergraduates eager to put our conceptual studies towards practical
applications and are led by our professor Frank Flury, who has headed every
project since 2005. We have meticulously studied the area, from it's vernacular
architecture, to its climate, to its economy, and we are confident that our
design will have a lasting impact on the community. By enlisting the help of
local builders, we hope a greater connection can be formed. One that will embed
our work into the identity of the area and instill a sense of pride in the
local craftsmen.
The Impact of Our Efforts
The village where we will be
building is in a mountainous region in the Northwest corner of Magetan,
Indonesia. From here, it is difficult for locals to reach a hospital in an
emergency. In most cases, the inflicted patients wait for care within the
community, resulting in the undesirable and dangerous exposure of family and
friends. Our facility will provide them with a safe and sterile place to stay
while awaiting a doctor's arrival. It is also directly adjacent to an existing
elementary school, giving the sick children a place to get immediate care.
What We Need
The remote village does not possess the funding to complete this building.
In order to make this project a reality, we need raise $15,000 USD to buy materials such as masonry, steel rebar, lumbar, and concrete. Additional materials will also be purchased to furnish the clinic with units that are built in house.
All funds are dedicated to the construction and completion of the health clinic meaning all design, labor, and logistic costs for travel will paid for out of pocket.
The Timeline
Week 1-3: Research
During the initial phase, the studio will research all aspects of Jabung, Indonesia including geography, climate, rural typologies, and culture.
Week 4-6: Design
In the secondary phase, all research culminated to make informed design visualizations and decisions attempting to be economical with material while also serving the needs of the village.
Week 7-15: Final Design/ Construction Documents
The tertiary phase consists of finalizing the design and structural details of the clinic followed by construction documents that will be submitted for permitting and approval.
Summer 2015: Construction & Completion
The Design/Build Studio will be making their way to Jabung, Indonesia in late May until early August to complete the construction of the health clinic.
