GOLDMINES FOUNDATIONGoldmines Foundation is a not for profit organization registered in
Kenya under the Companies Act Cap. 486. The organization was established
in April 2010 and is located in Kibera Olympic Estate, though reaching
out to the youths around Nairobi. Goldmines Foundation aims at impacting
the lives of the youths through empowerment. A majority of young people
have shown a willingness to develop themselves and their talents. This
project seeks to build and enhance their capacities.
According
to the International Labor organization 2010 estimates, youth
unemployment in Kenya stands at 70% of total number of the jobless. The
challenge facing Kenya today is to ensure that this large section of the
society is engaged in productive activities that will improve their
well being and contribute to the productivity of this country. Such
improved productivity will enhance the quality of life of all Kenyans.
However, unemployment among the youth is a grave wastage of national
resources due to high opportunity cost which impacts negatively on
social economic development. In addition, it increases dependency
syndrome, vicious cycle of poverty, social evils such as insecurity and
risky behaviors, economic malpractices and lack of dignity and self
esteem among the youth. Goldmines Foundation runs various programs with
the aim of seeing a better Kenya. Among them are the Dance and theater
club, music, creative arts, Entrepreneur's club and The Change Factor
Program.
THE CHANGE FACTOR PROGRAMThe Change Factor is a mentorship program that focuses at providing practical solutions through disseminating knowledge.
According
to the current statistics by the National Authority for the Campaign
against Alcohol and Drugs Abuse (NACADA), Children as young as 5 years
old are having their first experience with drugs as alcohol prevalence
is more prevalent in teenagers. They estimated that up to more than
55,000 children under the age of 14 are addicted to drugs and 45% of the
youths in this nation are abusing alcohol and drugs and if we round it
off to 50% it simply means that 1 out of every 2 youths is abusing
alcohol and drugs.
The Change Factor therefore through its
tailor made programs aims at empowering the youths to develop their
personal capabilities through educational and motivational experiences
thus helping them achieve their purpose in life.
Our mandate also is to train and create awareness on prevention and the risks of alcohol and drug abuse among the youths.
WHAT WE NEED AND WHAT YOU GETWe believe that the greatest investment one would ever make in life is
to invest in the lives of others. To have a vision that out lives you is
to think of others better than you think of yourself. We would love to
give you an opportunity to be part of this wonderful cause. We aim at raising 30000 U.S dollars with the aim of improving the lives of the youths in Kenya through empowerment. Through The Change Factor program, we aim at reaching tens of thousands of youths with the message of prevention and awarness of alcohol and drug abuse. In return we will furnish you with quaterly report, photos, videos of how the projects are going. (A project proposal can be sent on request.)
WHY SHOULD YOU SUPPORT US?
Kenya being a country constituted of 80% youths, it is not only important but a great requirement to invest in the lives of the youths. With
the current statistics on alcohol and drug abuse in Kenya, We notice that 55,000
children get their first encounter with drugs at the age of 5 which poses a great
danger since the same children will be required to be
responsible adults in a few years to come. If they grow as alcohol and drug abusers, they will
definitely pass it down to the new generation. This is a red flag to our country and also to our 2030 vision. Currently 45% of youth in this
nation are using alcohol and drugs and if we round it off to 50% it simply
means that 1 out of every 2 youths is using drugs. If we were to go by any of
this statistics, we are heading to a dangerous point in this country. With the
required funds available, Goldmines Foundation will be able to reach many young
people hence reducing the high rate of alcohol and drug abuse.
Looking at the raising
statistics of alcohol and drug abuse we all need to agree it’s the
responsibility of every individual to reach as many children and youths in Kenya on
awareness and prevention of alcohol and drug abuse. People who experiment with
drugs continue to use them because the drug either makes them feel good, or
stops them from feeling bad. In many cases, however, there is a thin line
between regular use and drug abuse and addiction. Very few addicts are able to
recognize when they have crossed that line. While frequency or the amount of
drugs consumed don’t in themselves constitute drug abuse or addiction, they
can often be indicators of drug-related problems. With a lot of issues
cropping up in our community, it has been witnessed that a lot of people use drugs
to fill a void in their lives. This puts them more at risk of crossing the line
from
casual use to drug abuse and addiction.
