I have met a number of great people over the years, but over the last year and change, I met one that has impacted me like no other. A man whose friendship is immense. Someone that consistently mentored others, and tirelessly pushed them to be better people. With a larger than life persona that include a boisterous laugh, big muscles, and a confidence unparalleled, he could put anyone at ease. His demeanor and style of speaking are compelling and his words are filled with wisdom. While many think that his huge heart is a blessing in their lives, the truth is, it is largely reserved for one person - his daughter.
He speaks about her all the time, affectionately referring to her as his "Baby Girl". He seems to find her in everything. A song on the radio, a container of food, a picture of a car... Everything is either something that reminds him of his favorite things about her, something to share with her, or something to dream about doing with her. His Love for her is astounding, and inspiring.
As a father myself, I know that having a child can truly impact you as a person. It can change your perspective on everything. And she most certainly changed him. This strong, proud man could have his beliefs flipped upside down if she merely poses a simple question. I didn't know him before he had his daughter, but I am sure he was a great man then. And I know she made him a better one.
Just over a week ago, this incredible man that I have the privilege of calling my friend, accidentally put his arm through a glass door that was shielding a fire hose. We hopped in an ambulance and went to the hospital where he was attended to and sent home. It was a freak accident, but the damage was so extensive that the hospital scheduled a day surgery to try to reconnect some of the tissues/nerves/tendons in his arm. He booked in, had the surgery, and I went to pick him up but they told me that he needed to stay overnight because he had a lot of sedative in his system. I visited with him briefly and saw my hulking friend relaxing, looking as cool as ever. He made me laugh, as he always did and I told him we would catch up in the morning. The following morning, just before being discharged, he passed away due to a pulmonary embolism.
My friend Loved his precious child deeply. I know that he wanted to be with her at every moment of the day. He wanted to support her dreams. He wanted to see her graduate. I'm asking you to help me honor his legacy by donating something towards her future. A good father is something to be celebrated, and I think the best way to do that, is to ensure that this child is not limited in her opportunities. I am hoping that this resonates for you because you want us all to take care of each other in these times of need. They say it takes a village to raise a child. Let's help her become an important member of the village so that she can take care of our children one day.
