The idea of Insectula!
I began shooting Insectula! with a commitment to do the best
I could, no matter how long it took. More than three years later, we are in post production. The movie has been edited and all the effects
are finished. I’m very happy with what we have and it is exactly what I
envisioned. What remains now is to make sure it is finished properly and we can
get it out to the biggest audience possible.
I've studied film all my life. I went to college for a degree in film and directed commercials and industrials after. I eventually got into computer programming, and that has helped with the technological aspects of handling a heavily VFX movie.
My goal was to create the funnest movie I could and pay
homage to the movies I grew up with. Although I didn’t have much of a budget,
the film couldn’t look cheap…it had to look like we had far more to work with,
something I’m proud to say I think I achieved. I learned visual effects while
making Insectula! in order to make it look like a film with a bigger budget, as well as to cut costs.
The effects are about half practical and half CGI. Doing something of this scale all practical would have pushed costs to an unabtainable level. I found what looked the best and worked well was a combination of both types, and most of the effects were done that way.
Color was very important, both on the set as well as in
post. I utilized custom algorithms to try and emulate the Eastmancolor stocks
of those older films. I wanted the look and the feel of the film to mirror
those sensibilities I remember so well.
Along the way...
We are fortunate enough to work with Anne Marie Gillen,
producer of Fried Green Tomatoes, Under Suspicion, and others, as well as the
author of Varieties’ "The Producers Handbook", who became the Executive Producer
of the film.
Companies contacted us with offers to help out with post
costs and distribution, but after long negotiations with several, we felt we
could do just as well on our own. Savings and a grant from The Jerome
Foundation kept production going until we had finished. However, in December I
had a heart attack that caused unforeseen consequences with our finances. Even
with insurance, the bills for a heart attack are devastating. Money that was
going to be used to complete the film and begin marketing had to be used.
The help we need
We are asking for your help in finishing Insectula! the
proper way as well as bringing it to as many people as we can. We still have
scoring, 5.1 mixing, final grading, finalizing, and packaging to do, as well as marketing. The main hurdle has been passed, but you can help us cross the finish line with the quality it deserves.
The top level of donations are the Associate Producer slots. We believe Insectula! is going to make an impact, and we've had professional third-party projections done to back this up. This is a quality film and having your name listed as a producer is a perk that actually has some meaning in this case.
Any amount will help us. We can use every dime and there is absolutely no danger of this film not being finished, so your money will definitely help us out and go towards a finished project you will see.
Please consider
It’s a really great film and I want you all to see it
properly. I think you’ll find it funny and impressive, especially what we did
with the budget we had. We've had over 800,000 hits on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhY6_6NUkjQ) and we know there is an audience for this. Please contribute anything you can, and if you can’t contribute,at
least help spread the word. Let's get this seen!
I think you’ll agree, Insectula! is worth it!
