Working in the Amazon
Hi my name is Paul Rosolie. For the past several years I have worked in southeast Peru with a local naturalist named Juan Julio Durand to protect rainforest. We have done this by opening our doors to travelers from all over the world. People come and get to see the amazing wildlife of the Amazon, and help to protect the jungle they experience. We accomplish our mission of safeguarding wildlife by operating a research station or lodge on a tributary of the Madre de Dios River. Please check out a link about the work that we do here and also here.
Having our lodge allows us to accommodate visitors, who make it possible to protect the forest. People who join us in the forest are not tourists, they are helping to protect our land with us; these are Junglekeepers.
Our research station is a beautiful and serene place located in the middle of hundreds of miles of jungle. However in the last two years our job has not been easy. We have fought off poachers, loggers, and other invaders, and even come close to altogether losing our land and the station. Protecting rainforest out on the Amazon frontier is no easy task. While we have been struggling to keep the forest protected our research station has fallen into disrepair. The palm-thatched roof has developed holes that let in rain. If rain continues to fall onto the floor of the station the wood will rot and we will no longer be able to accommodate visitors and protect the forest. This is what we need your help to fix.
We want to replace the palm-thatch roof with stronger, more durable corrugated steel. This will keep our station safe and running, and make it possible for us to continue protecting our preserve and the millions and millions of creatures within it.
What We Need & What You Get
- We need to raise $9,500 before the start of the rainy season (approximately Nov. 15). The money raised will go towards materials, transportation, and labor to fix our roof as soon as possible, before it starts raining!
- This is no ordinary ‘donate to a cause’ campaign. We are inviting you to become a part of our Junglekeeper team. We want everyone who contributes and supports us to actually come visit us in the rainforest and see the outcome of his or her contribution. We are giving away free trips, t-shirts, books, photos and more!
-
Everyone who donates to this campaign, no matter what the amount, will have their names added to a plaque that will be installed at the research station, to make sure that people for decades to come appreciate what you did!
The Impact
- The loss of life on our planet has been called the ‘defining issue of our time’, and we are alive at a time in history when there is still so much left to save. Today the western Amazon is the largest area of intact rainforest habitat on Earth. It is the most biodiverse place that has ever existed, ever. That means that there are more species of plant and animals there than anywhere else. It holds the world records for birds, butterflies, dragonflies, and amphibians. Our research station protect species like endangered macaws, jaguars, spider monkeys, howler monkeys (and 10 other monkeys), giant anteaters, sloth, anaconda, black caiman, and thousands more.
- In the last few years we have caught loggers red handed, rescued species captured by poachers, and maintained a sanctuary where wildlife can exist in peace. People from Australia, Finland, the US, UK, India, France, England, Canada, South Africa, and other places have joined us in the field to be a part of the team. By helping us fix the roof you’ll be allowing this special project to continue growing.
Other Ways You Can Help
Please remember that even small donations help us achieve our goal, but we understand that some people really can’t contribute. Please remember that:
We need help making as much noise about this as possible. Share the IndieGogo Page with ten of your friends on Facebook, or Twitter, help us get the message out! Check out the Indie Gogo share tools. Also talk to friends and family about our mission! Lets do this together!
