Kastom Permaculture is a self-help aid project meaning a project which supports, sustains the local knowledge through the visitors’ knowledge. The community has a key role: the proposed activities are combinations between the needs of the beneficiaries and the problems observed by the visitor.

The project is located in Vunarei village, Big Bay bush, central Santo : a strategic position resonating fast and widely with the entire territory from down on the salt water, to up in the higher bush. It is a gathering point for the villages on the nearby hills which need to send their products to sell in town.

The project is born with the demand and the creation of an intercultural community. Graham Carai and George his uncle with their family are the initiators; they are hosting and leading the new community in its interactions with the “village” community.

The preservation and the valorisation of the traditional kastoms is the first part of the project, new international community members will integrate it before to promote it.

The land here is still tuning with kastoms, Men traditionally are living off the ground and developed ancestral cultivating systems where food and rites found their source.

On the other hand the international community members will receive the benefit of learning from a remaining tribal society. Our interest is to bring awareness on the importance and the need of preserving their culture and at the same time accompany the locals in their interaction with the modern world , giving them the tools of understanding nutrition, processed  food and sustainable consumerism.

The chief offered an “exercise” site, strategically situated right next to the village on the flat exit of a network of small steep valleys, a land left in fallow for few years in order to bring back the fertility. A place where we could demonstrate how to live  on permanent gardens, building up the soil with natural fertilising solutions and integrating different animal systems management.

All the community there and a lot of surroundings ones are looking forward to help, participate and learn new technics. We decided together, after a feasibility study, to establish a “community garden” as a demonstration site where we will mix our knowledges and ideas with their ancestral skills to develop new practices toward sustainability and accompany each others toward self sufficiency. Here was born “Kastom Permaculture

We put up a map of the existent ground and plantation and  right now we are working on the design of a permaculture demonstration site that will illustrate technics precisely adapted to the needs of this island and this country.
