In July 2012 we ran a 2 week campaign to help a friend who is fighting to protect her kids from being returned to a neglectful part-time home where they were repeatedly abused, and raised a little over $5000. We appreciate that people gave generously to an anonymous mother trying to help her kids heal from abuse so horrific that sharing any details could not only compromise the custody proceedings, but the criminal case against the offender.
We humbly ask your help again, as our friend still needs help with mounting legal bills. She has temporary full custody while a thorough investigation is underway, but in order to keep her children forever safe, she needs to get full custody on a permanent basis. The father continues to claim his home is the best place for his children, and is financially draining her with delays, objections, and appeals.
At the end of the legal proceedings all of the funds not used will go to a charitable organization that supports the legal needs of abused children.
What We Need & What You Get
Our friend has spent over $60,000 of her own money already, wiping out her retirement and leveraging her assets to make sure her kids are safe. While we have set a goal of $5,000 for this campaign, we need much more.
All donated funds will be used to pay legal and related expenses, such as attorneys, court appointed evaluators, transcription and filing fees, etc.
All donors will receive a report of how the money was used within one month of the campaign close date. You can also sign up for one of several perks, depending on your donation level.
Despite the fact that the mother is not receiving any sort of child support from the father, donations will not be used for daily expenses.
The Impact
Can you afford to give $1? $5? How much do you lose in the couch cushions or put in the street busker's hat or overtip at the bar when you've been out with friends? The power of community means that lots of small donations make a huge difference. And while big donations go far, all donations matter. No contribution is too small.
Doubt we're for real? Wil Wheaton doesn't. See his retweet here.
These kids have gone through things no one should - you can help make their future a little brighter.
Other Ways You Can Help
Can't afford to contribute financially? Please share the word about this campaign - tell your friends, post on Facebook, Twitter, send email, talk to your hairdresser or barrista. During our first campaign we had people setting up local fundraisers, offering their own perks to get their friends to donate. Every little bit helps.
