Our Story
Hi there, we're Kern Family Farm. We're small farmers in North Fork, the exact center of California. For the past fourteen years we've been focusing on Farming and giving back to our community. We run our town's school garden, donating one day a week there, and we also help hand out food once a month to the less fortunate. In addition, we run a year round internship program where we teach up to eight people from all over the world farming and homesteading skills.
Our little town needs a lot more TLC. Most of the buildings in our town are vacant, and there are very few options for healthy food. Most people drive out of town to grocery shop, sending money out of our local economy.
That's why we're opening a new, local, healthy market. We want our community to have access to (mostly) organic food, and we want to have an outlet for other local farmers and artisans to sell their produce and products. This will keep more money circulating in our town, and build our sense of community.
We want to move to main street so we can have a better connection to our community, and so we can start including them in events and workshops we hope to host at our store and on our farm. Right now we have a shop in a basement downtown, but most people don't know it exists. We don't have a shop keeper, so it's run on the honor system. Because of this, we restrict access to members who have to unlock the shop, fill out their own receipts, and lock up afterwards.
Our new store will be much larger, so we can carry more products, have seating, and maybe even a smoothie bar, and yes, a shopkeeper! The building we're moving into is actually no longer an entire building. We're in the process of remodeling the entire structure. Where we need your help is fixing up the interior to create a welcoming environment.
We'll need to buy:
Paint: $250
Shelving: $4,000
Refrigeration and Freezing units: $12,000
Bulk Bins: $4,500
Certified Sinks: $2,500
Display Cases: $4,000
Packaging: $2,000
Seating: $500
The store we have now is bringing in funds, but it's not enough to accomplish the whole task. We love our lifestyle, but it's not a huge money maker. We're constantly competing with the mega corporations that control our food system. They're able to keep food prices low through subsidies and their sheer size. People are continuing to pay less for less nutritional foods full of GMOs, pesticides and other chemicals,. That's why we're so excited about our new store!
We want our community to benefit from healthy, local food, and have another place for them to visit downtown. this is soarly needed in our community. we can't wait to get up and running!
Thank you so much for anything you can contribute.
We hope to see you when we open our doors
With love and respect,
The Kerns
