Nothing prepares you for the moment the doctor follows up after an appointment with the call, “The test results are in. You have cancer.” This was particularly true for Dan. He knew something wasn’t quite right when the mole on his leg began to change, but didn’t think much of it. It wasn’t until the results came back after reluctantly making an appointment with a dermatologist, having a large portion of the mystery mole removed on the spot, that he even suspected anything COULD be wrong. Once officially diagnosed, it was abundantly clear that the road to recovery would be a long and tedious one. This is the Cancer Chapter of Dan’s story.

Dan was diagnosed with Stage 3C Melanoma in late February of this year. What started in a small dermatological office, quickly turned into a roller coaster of scans and tests and needles and more tests, surgeries, rehabilitation, staples, drains, stitches, nurses with funny hats, anesthesiologists who looked like "The Hulk," blood tests and more needles. Dan’s mole was now being classified as a tumor and it needed to be removed. Dan went into surgery in late March to remove the rapidly growing tumor, and explore for more evidence of cancer cells. Unfortunately, upon the completion of the first surgery, the surgeon found that the cancer had spread into Dan’s lymph nodes and more tests needed to be ordered at once. The doctor's concern was that with such an aggressive form of cancer, that there was a  higher risk that tumors would be present elsewhere. Further tests concluded that they would have to go back in and remove ALL of the lymph nodes in Dan’s affected leg as they were contaminated with cancer cells. Two surgeries later, tri-weekly doctor’s appointments, specialists, follow-ups, both progressions and set-backs, picking an oncologist, researching the benefit and risks of each treatment plan, Dan has finally committed to a health regime to rid cancer completely.

Now, begins the medical half of his cancer treatment. A rigorous round of intravenous drugs become a monthly reality for Dan in the next year. The symptoms, as with any medication, have the potential to be challenging, but Dan is a fighter, resilient and, ultimately, a survivor! From the very first day, Dan has been defying medical odds. His doctors look at him in pure wonderment as he challenges the statistics that usually follow a diagnosis as critical as his. His approach to cancer is much like his philosophy in life: Be Resilient!

As to be expected between surgeries, recovery and now chemotherapy, Dan has been out of work consistently since March. While he has been recently cleared for work, with his unpredictable treatment side effects, he may be in and out for some time. Between the expense of continually growing medical bills and the cost of living, needless to say, the financial burden has been a struggle. “It takes a village…,” as they say, and Dan needs his tribe now, more than ever. Any contribution, great or small, to help Dan during this difficult time would be greatly appreciated.

Financial stress is the last thing anyone fighting a debilitating disease should be concerned with. Let’s help Dan focus on getting healthy and strong, and together, help lessen the burden of the bills. For those unable to contribute financially, good energy and happy thoughts are equally as important. If you would like to follow Dan’s road to recovery, you can do so on Facebook at “A Day with Dan.”
