Who Are We, And What Are We Doing?
We are Kula Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization building up communities
in the developing world, starting with the family farm.
For the past year, our team has been working in Rwanda developing relationships with farmers on Ruli Mountain, learning about their greatest needs and getting their ideas on how to solvate community's most pressing problems. Together we came up with a three-phase program, in which we help farmers scale their coffee production, introduce and implement food-crop planting systems to provide the family with a balanced diet, and then teach our best performing farmers how to train their peers.
It's been an amazing year in Rwanda. Twenty families have planted more than 5,000 coffee trees with 6 tons of organic fertilizer and brand new, top-notch farm tools. Without the support of our Kula community, none of that would be possible. This program will provide the income to feed a balanced diet to 40 parents and 93 children. In the coming years 81 children will be able to attend secondary school because these coffee trees provided the parents with the income for school fees.
This is what we've done in Rwanda, but we are just getting started.

What We Need
Our team decided to start with 20 families to make sure our pilot program was efficient and sustainable. Now that we have the kinks worked out, we are ready to work with 50 widow-led families in 2015, helping to scale their coffee and banana production. In order to make this happen, we need $150,000. As this year comes to end, we thought it would be an excellent opportunity to secure $15,000 of our total goal.
Our goal is to secure funding for 1,500 coffee trees, 1,000 banana trees, farm tools for 10 families, and nutrition training for 20 families.

The Impact
According to the World Bank, investing in agriculture is twice as effective at eliminating poverty than investing in any other sector. When our founder first saw third-world poverty, she was moved by the children that did not have food to eat or a school to attend, but after more research, she knew the most sustainable way for children to have food and education would be to equip their parents to be able to afford it on their own.
Coffee is the most important cash crop in Rwanda, and banana trees provide nutrition for the family and a natural shade for the coffee trees, protecting their most valuable crop from the sun.
90% of our farmers plan to use the income the are able to earn from our program to send their children to school. Some of our other farmers want to get electricity in their home, start new businesses, and purchase medical insurance for their family.
After spending a year in this beautiful country of Rwanda, getting to know and love the farmers of Ruli Mountain, their greatest goals quickly became our own.
Join us as we work alongside these farmers, giving them an opportunity to achieve their goals.
Be a part of a farmer's story.
